Personally I prefer a heat exchanger after the fuel filter. My reasoning is that if there are any lumps of solidified fats in the fuel lines I would rather the (cheap and easy to replace) filter picked them up rather than them getting liquified in a heated filter so they pass through into the engine.
It may well be flawed logic though so I stand to be corrected.
Surf filters are so cheap I don't see the point in a pre filter

i was unsure as i've looked for the water fed heaters on ebay but there isn't many at the moment but i suppose a call to a friend of mine might just turn something up hopefully theres lots of electric heaters advertised but i'm not to sure about them after what yourself and others have said so i was trying to avoid that sort but i saw this and thought that as it was alledgedly supplied as an upgrade for the role its advertised for it was worth a look and an ask for adviceI'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

you can use heat exchangers from boilers. Scrappys have them someetimes or talk to a friendly plumber.

thought as much mate cheers for the info i've looked through ebay but haven't had much luck but i've also seen some home made ones but them i'm not too sure about the quality as a few are wrapped against heat loss their words not mine so you can't see whats what but it looks like a tube within a tube with no plates for heat exchange just a pipe immersed in the coolant carried inside the outer pipeI'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

heated fuel filter from a 1980s peugeot 205/405 diesel. take the thermostat out and plum it into your incab heating.
i had one fitted to a couple of my pajeros i used to own and the thing would be too hot to touch after a while.
last time i got one from a breakers for about £5. they are getting harder to find and go for about £25 on good old ebay
