cheers guys i've read through quite a bit but its a mix of everyones experience in wvo and i got quite confused as to whats what with respect i am struggling with the thought of just bunging it in the tank due to heaters and fuel filter gelling i ran my old xantia on svo for a while without any mixing and it seemed ok but with the truck i'm more worried about any issues with it as its my only form of transport apart from legs and crutches lol

Completely understand and I felt the same. However fitting a heat exchanger will cost around £50 if you buy new plus fitting (but easy enough to do yourself if you are a bit handy) and fuel filters are cheap enough to have a few knocking around in the back of the truck.

Re: the filtering system if I were to do it again I would use a cheap gravity system as I think the pumps can push through small particles that a gravity system wouldn't. Keep an eye on ebay as people get rid mof their systems for a fraction of what they cost.

I havent heard of anyone with a Surf having had anything really serious happen like the engines giving out (I'm writing this with crossed fingers in case the irony-daemon decides to be funny). As long as you make sure your oil is clean and dry it seems (through anecdotal evidence*) that you should be fine.

Bottom line is, worse case scenario: you get up one morning in the winter and the surf wont start. So... Call a cab and get driven wherever you are going, safe in the knowledge that the money you have saved by using WVO will pay for that cab many times over. In fact, fck it. Get a limo.

*though I accept that the plural of 'anecdote' isn't 'fact' but its all we have to work with.

i've heard so many things about the heat exchangers whats the best one to look at? i've looked at electric ones water fed ones but there are so many different oppinions about these i know some of the earlier french cars have the heated fuel filter run from the heater hoses which would be the easiest way to go but would that entail removing the original surf filter and use the heated filter or in fact it could go inline as a pre-filter before the original acting as a twin filter setup saving the original filter and i would end up only having to change the pre-filter more often trouble is i can't remember what models had a stand alone heated filter as the xantia and most of the pugs from the 205,305,405 had the fuel filter sat on the thermostat housing i have already got about 20ltrs of wvo at the moment but its not been filtered fine enough yet but i want to know where to get the filters from i know ebay do have them on but its not complete with the filter housing just the 5 and 1 micron filter element don't suppose anyone on here knows where i can get the complete filter for wvo from
oh and i'm going to use jerry cans as as basis for the filtering on three levels ie top one for the basic filtered which filters to 5micron into the second level filter out to 1 micron to the third which will be direct to the truck am i about right?

I'm getting 48mpg from my 3.0 second gen.

I drive half of the way, and walk the rest.
It's a better mod than that swirley thing they sell on ebay for your inlet pipe.
                Oh Nana, what's my name?

If you're that worried just use UP TO 50% New veg oil from tesco, you'll be saving about 40p a litre!
If you can get a supply of used cooking oil that you trust then just do what i do. Strain through a 100% cotton cloth, then put into a 3 tank gravity system (it's in the sticky thread) then bung it bin your motor and drive! Been doing this for about 2 years now!

Find out how he currently gets rid of it first. Ask him about any issues or good things about this current situation.
Then offer something which improves on it. i.e. more regular collections, smaller/larger containers, more cash in return, donation to charity, beer etc. etc.

Bear in mind some chippies are paid up to 40p per litre by people, others pay top have it taken away.
Either way if he has any friers used for doing anything other than chips i.e. meat etc. You ideally want to make him a god enough offer that he will bother to sort you out just the oil used for chips, its better quality and will have less crap in it. Still collect the other oil but give it away or recycle it at the local tip etc.

As Alan said get some new oil and try it out to assuage your worries

                          Make sure its not block oil {lard} and don't run veg on Wednesdays {bad very bad}
Never in a Blue truck as they had the engine upgrade.
