Hi guy's,

If money was no object (which it is) What would be the best DIESEL engine to put in a Surf?

I would prefer diesel as they are simpler than petrol and don't have problems with water (which for me is a bonus/necessity)

I saw on the front of Landrover Owner International (I know, why was I looking ) that some one had put a RangeRover Sport TD V8 in a Defender, looked good. That made me think what would be the ultimate Diesel engined surf? There must be something better than the Toyota 3.0 lump (mine's only a puny 2.4

How do you mean by best though? IF I had an option and the space permitted to transplant another Diesel engine, then it would be a 2 stroke diesel. These are generally quiet large engines though! IF not then a regular 4 stroke cummins.. MMMM V8 Diesel

Would be wasted in a Surf though... The amount of power you would have.

I had thought about the straight six amazon for my 3rd gen but i think it is too long and i would have to extend the wings and bonnet??
also was told it would be very heavy!
was gonna look for a BMW 535 twin turbo instead...any thoughts?

I may be turning into a sensible old man but what's the point of an exotic conversion apart from 'Just because' ???

The only reasons I'd swap the engine are:

1. More torque
2. Better reliability
3. Better fuel consumption (This one's a joke !)


Working on the above I'd go down the Lexurf route and throw some dosh at Vince !

They would be the reasons I'd swap an engine too, although by the time you've swapped the engine (probable cost £2000?) The fuel consumpion is not worth worrying about - 2K buy's a lot of fuel if you're only getting 5-10mpg better!

:nods: Exactly. Unless you do all the fab and work yourself, any engine change is never going to be cheaper than replacing what you have with the same.

A 3.0 4Runner motor and manual box is about the easiest swap you could do to a 2.4, but anything else starts to get complicated.

People need to appricate how much of a favour Vince is doing people with all the Lexarse swaps, the amount of work, and knowledge you're getting for what he charges is amazing, I doubt you could get it 'proffesionally' done for twice or three times the price, and it will never be such a good job.

Engine swaps are never that simple, or cheap once you add everything up. To get more power for more fun really the only justification for doing it.

I totally agree with TonyN, I don't know Vince but looking at the quality of the workmanship going into the lexsurf conversion, there is no way he's making money.
I've seen Hiroler's lexsurf in the flesh and it's work of art! The latest one he's doing (with the blue rocker covers) looks even better!

In my dreams I had this vision of getting hold of a rusty Lancia 832 (the one with the Ferrari V8) cos you can get them reasonably cheap, and popping that under the hood of a Surf.

I expect the torque develops too high up the revs etc etc, but what a sound to have from a truck!

Got to admit that the ego trip/noise aspect might well kick in if I had a lorryload of dosh but then I'd probably go hog wild with a supercharged 5.7 V8 in a much newer (and less battered) Surf ...

I just had a look at the lexsurf IV thread again, and saw the engine installed, damn it looks good, I want one, gonna have to start saving big time/sell a kidney, does anybody need one? 1 owner from new/not abused (much) - do I have to pay to advertise a kidney on here? Do I really need my liver and spleen?

For that reason(s) I consider myself extremely lucky that vince is building me a lexurf. The workmanship/quality/end product is absolutely phenomanal, and for the money he charges...unbelivable value. He is...as James may often notes...a man in a shed. ( well garage, but you get my point). If vince can do you a lexurf, take him up on the offer. The anticipation, following it's progress via here is half the fun.
