I'm agreeing with Ian. Most Surfs people are buying are not forum member owned trucks.

Fresh imports, well, you have no idea whos done servicing on it before. Likely its had no cooling system servicing. Best to assume that much.

Most new owners dont immediately check rads, stats, hoses etc and a lot of owners (and I've seen this 1st hand many times) will plough around the Plain and other muddy places never even taking a cursory look at the rad afterwards, then wonder when they overheat.

So, my guess is as Ian says. No cooling system servicing.

I have seen other crazy stuff though, like one truck parked at Tonys with 4 x spotlights above the bumper, completely blocking airflow to the rad...

@ Rodsurf, Toyota Red is what they come from the factory with.

Agreed, this is why the first thing I did was to give the cooling system a good going over before I did anything else, that said, I probably would not have done so if I had not read about it on this site (I'm far from being any kind of mechanic) so how many people have bought a surf and not had the cooling system checked, anyone that has not had contact with this (or similar) sites would just bung it in the garage and hope they did everything they should on the services when actually the cooling system is not being touched.

My failure was caused by being a dickhead. I knew that the rad had a slow weep but didn't get around to changing it until after I'd cracked the head.
The previously slow weep developed, without warning, into a major gush on a 10mile thrash up the M40. By the time I'd noticed & stopped, it was too late.
Moral of the story I guess, is if the cooling system develops a weep, do something about it pronto, or accept the expensive consequences.

my opinion is the outlet on the rads bottom hose, its partly blocked by the tranny oil cooler.

i ask the question how many manual surfs have had head probs?
i ask coz the their rads don't have a tranny cooler in them, i know of 3 manual surfs and none have overheat or head probs.....yet.

mine went as a result of rad seam failure with its previous owner i guess coz the wireing that runs along the slam panel has partly melted by steam not fire, this only became apparent while stripping it..

why does a surf work in japan for 10 years with no probs then once in the UK they fail. surely our ambient temp is lower than thiers and don't they have bad congestion over there so meaning sustained long periods of idleing.

                    thats my 2 peneth worth
Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

Tokyo is supposed to be the most congested city in the world, although the Japanese probably do manage the traffic flow better.

Also bear in mind, a lot of these motors, especially the 2.4's
are knocking on 20 years old.

you mean they are only 20 years old with a mere 100,000 or so on the clock.

this isn't just a surf prob, afaik pajero's,mr2 and quite a few other imports have head probs.

most engines will burnout a head gasket in their lifetime but most are just the gasket, landys go at about 150k miles
