  • Aircon removal, Air compressor instead

    Hi all,

Techie question, I am thinking of removing my Aircon and just using the pump to do the excellent air compressor mod that GAMEDAWN did back in 2004. Here:

    http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ard+compressor

I understand roughly how it works.

I need a pressure switch and release valve - easy to get from ebay, as is pipe, and a airline oiler (Maybe a regulator for when I want less pressure such as blowing up Inflatables or using the air blower)

I'm going to use an old fire extinguisher bottle as the reciever tank (undermounted) they are rated to serious PSI so should be no problem.

    >>>So can the pressure switch go anywhere on the pressurised side of the system or does it have to go on the tank? Can it sit next to the compressor?

    >>>Oiler goes on the intake side?

    >>>The 12v goes into the pressure switch then out to the a/c compressor?

    >>> How do you make the compressor run without gas? I read on this forum that the A/C compressor wont lock in without gas in.

What am I forgetting? Any idea's would be gratefully recieved

    What else can I remove?
The A/C rad, condensor (but where is he condensor located?)
any other bits to be removed?

Yes, the pressure switch can go anywhere on the pressure side of the system. I've got a small manifold mounted in one of the side pockets in the load area with the pressure switch and a quick release coupling mounted on it (keeps the important bits clean).

The oiler goes on the inlet side of the compressor. Normal aircon gas has oil in it and it is this that keeps the bearings sweet.

The 12V goes through an on/off switch, then the pressure switch and finally to the compressor. The compressor only needs gas when it's part of the aircon system - you're now running the clutch independently of the cars original electrics so no problem.

Basically, have fun and remove what you can see (except the compressor, obviously. That would be embarassing and silly!). I left the stuff that's behind the dash 'cos I was lazy.

The pressure switch needs to operate at around 90psi. The aircon compressor seems to be good for around 100psi max. Go for the biggest bottle you can fit - fit two if you can. I've got a 2½gal tank mounted where the underslung spare wheel used to be and it's amazing how quickly it empties when blowing a tyre up.

Cheers Gman - I just found a plumbing relief valve for 7 bar (105psi) might try that. I'll look at thorite in a minute

Easy option, used this for couple of years with no issues.
You could hard wire it if you wanted.
