  • Dodgy engine noise

Completed the cylinder head swap at the weekend, and since then been wondering what this slightly dodgy noise is - can't say for sure if it was the same before, but it's definitely got worse recently. Happens pretty much whenever the engine is over 2000 RPM, especially under load.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like the turbo to me, it's boosting at around that RPM.
Check the hose connections to and from the turbo, it could also be the metal gasket between the turbo and exhaust.

Was worried that might be the answer...

Hoses all fine, however... There was no gasket there when I did the head swap, and none in the kit... so there isn't one in. Likely problem?

Just thinking, do you mean the exhaust manifold to turbo join, or turbo to exhaust (which I didn't touch)?

After my head change I had a similar noise, garage guessed it was a leak in exhaust or turbo gasket somewhere, I have never found it and the noise eventually faded away...

Manifold to turbo joint. It's a thin metallic gasket. I smeared some exhaust joint paste to both sides of it to make sure it sealed when I replaced a turbo recently, as it was making the same noise.

Grand, thanks for replies - think I'll ignore it for a while and see if it gets better - at least I know where to look now if it doesn't.

The only way it'll get better is with gasket or if it carbons up itself in time(which is the easy option!)
