Original rads are fixed, some aftermarket (like R/T) are screw on fitting, like Albananananach said, PTFE tape or other thread sealant.
Or get a AFT oil cooler and disconnect it completely.

WHILST ON THE SUBJECT OF RADS.
why do toyota put the atf cooler pipe in the rad accross the bottom hose outlet, sureley that reduces the flow and hinders the efficiency of the rad and aides overheat = cracked head.
all part of toyota's master plan, ''if they don't break then you won't buy a new one''Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

TBH, it's not an issue normally, its only if you tow heavy trailers (Surf wasn't really built for this, they have LC's for this) or the rad is blocked internally or externally or you make the engine work harder than normal (bigger tyres) that the cooling system can't cope.
Toyota seen to have got the cooling system a little underspecc'ed for sure its easy to overload it if nort 100% right, but I think the Surf was really aimed at the SUV people. The Landcruiser goes round the world, the Pickup you can drive off a cliff, the Surf is kinda a compromise between the two, making it virtauly the perfect allround truck, but not as good at coping with extemes as the other two.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...
