  • Strange vibration Any idea's

My Surf a 3rd gen 3.0 TD has developed a strange vibration which seems to eminate from the nearside wing/ engine bay. It sounds as though the exhaust is blowing or a pipe rattling but I have checked that and its oK, it is there on tick over and up to about 2200 revs. Sometimes everything is quiet with just the normal engine sounds. Its driving me nuts as when it there the Surf sounds very noisy.

I suppose I could just turn up the radio!!!!!!!!

It might be an idea to check all your ancillary belts and tensioners/mounting, i have had experience of bad vibes before and ignored it until my alternator dropped off of the car on the M1 at about 100MPH (not the surf, a car i had years back)it gave the AA man a good laugh!!
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

Next time you're sitting in the car and the noise is present, get someone to push down on the edge of the bonnet closest to the wipers. Push it in the centre, between the washer jets. You might find that the sound stops! Mine does it and apparently its a bit of a design fault with 3rd gen 4Runners & Surfs. I did post on that once, wonder if its still on here somewhere as I posted a link to something as well...

          Found it http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1527

Or go to Yotatech and search for hood vibration which is probably a better idea.

Thanks for that Rob, Will give it a try. Someone also said it could be the air filter as the tubing goes through the nearside wing above the plastic arch protectors. It then vibrates with the engine at certain revs. Will take off the arch protector and check it out when I get back from hols. I will have to put up with it til then.
