  • What can / can't you do if your vehicle fails it's MOT?

Hello, there's loads of conflicting information on the net and all the links I've found to the VOSA site are for old pages and don't show up.

If I drive to an MOT test centre and my vehicle fails as far as I know my car is no longer road legal and the fail negates any time left I had on my old MOT and so repairs need to take place before I can use it again (not sure if I can still drive home or not??).

A friend of mine is of the opposit opinion, she thinks that if her MOT runs out then she can still drive around until the end of the original MOT period, in this case, the end of this month.

    Who's right? Me or her?

    Thanks,

    Ray.

I'd say the original MOT pass certificate is still valid.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

A valid MOT is just that. Say your brakes are dodgy after 6 months of the current MOT, that doesn't negate the MOT certificate. It's just something you should get fixed a.s.a.p.

You could drive away from a garage with a full years MOT and then when you indicate a bulb blows, which is an mot failure, but it doesn't mean to say the certificate you just got is invalid.

As long as you have a current MOT it is still valid and you are legally covered. If the police use that camera check thingy on your car /truck it will still show up as currently MOT'ed.

if you book the car in for an M.O.T, and it fails, you cannot drive the car.

when you book for an M.O.T, you lose any existing MOT you have left whether it is 2 days or 6 months.

because the garage will put the car on the records as having failed its last MOT. which negates the 6 months you have left on the prior one.

if the cops did a camera check...

the records will show MOT FAILED.

as the garage has to report it as a failure, which will be updated to the vehicle system.

If you check with the MOT database (details are on the MOT certificate) it shows your vehicle as a MOT failure form the point that the MOT is finished. At this point expect to be stopped by plod.

You are allowed to drive your vehicle to and from a prebooked place where the work is to be carried out, as long as your vehicle is in a roadworthy fashion.

                FFS!!
If it needs an MOT, book it, drive it there, if it fails, drive it home, fix it, drive it back for the partial re-test (if within 14 days) get ticket!

Of course if the above method makes you nervous, you'll need to hire a car transporter, a vehicle to tow it, probably twice if the truck fails, which all adds up to probably four times the amount for a fine you'd have to pay if by the remotest of chances you get pulled over by the donut eaters!

You won't have a flashing neon sign following you everywhere announcing to the world, that as well as killing the planet by owning a 4x4, it doesn't have an MOT either!

                Sheesh!!

Please discount my information regarding the subject. After reading the other comments it appears I may have been talking a load of bollox!

Sorry about that, it's an age thing.

If it fails and there is still time left on the current certificate then why not carry around the current cert as backup you have an MOT.

I had this a few weeks ago when i mot'd the 3.0l i got for sale.
The mot testing station has to by law have the vehicle registration so if you get pulled over either to or from a test then the police can then contact the testing station direct to make sure you are going or have been for a mot.It does not matter if the vehicle has passed or failed.
If the testing station don't ask for the vehicle details when the test is booked then they are not doing their job properly as this is the only proof you will have to say you are going to or have been for a mot.
My tester is one of the strictest i know and is normally right upto date with anything to do with mot's

Even if your MOT has expired, you are still insured... now if you write off your beloved Surf without an MOT those nice insurance people will argue its value has gone down because you have no MOT, but your still insured.

Its hardly a hanging offense if plod stops you

if its a serious failure the MOT tester can put a ticket on it that stops you from takeing it from the station on anything other than a transporter. i nearly got one on my old disco coz the body was only being held on by one body mount
Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

Well, unsurprisingly opinion is divided. This seems to be the problem with the MOT info, it's either unclear or poorly advertised.

Everyone MOTs their vehicles every year (unless the vehicle is under 3 years old) yet I didn't get a 90% answer one way or the other which, if it was clear or well advertised I would have expected.

She's decided I am wrong and although her car failed it's MOT she's going to 'show a bit of leg' and try to get away with it if she's pulled over as she has no intention of getting it fixed before the end of the month!

On a side note I am surprised this thread warranted a 'FFS!!'

                              Thanks anyway guys,

                              Ray.
