ECU Re-map

I have a 1991 3L V6 ( putting in this forum for a bigger audience)

The power from the engine is about 140-150Hp and the fuel economy is pretty bad too. Have heard that re-mapping the ECU will cure these problems in one swoop....is this true, has anyone had it done and is it expensive?
