  • Daft Question - Speedo

Can a vehicle pass an MOT with kmph speedo

I've just bought a recently imported surf which I pickup on Saterday (26/06) and this would be an indication of the honesty of the importer.

It is my belief that the speedo has to be in mph for both MOT and C&UR.

    Cheers

To pass an MOT in the UK, the speedo has to show MPH.

Will try and find a link for you.

      Speedometer road vehicles(construction and use)1986.reg.35 and36
"if a vehicle first used on or after 01.04.84 must be capable of
indicating speed in MPH and KPH"
I hope this answers your question

Most of the Surfs I looked at, advertised as having an MOT only had KPH on the dial, I wonder whether the testers turn a blind eye?

it only seems trivial untill you see the blue lights behind or
a spot check by the Vehicle Examination Team.

The garage where I brought my surf changed the speedo dail as
part of the vehicle preperation for sale in the UK with rear
fog light etc.I would expect any reputable inporter would only sell you a fully legal compliant vehicle?

              maybe....

I don't think a tester would specifically look unless they knew the vehicle was an import?

My surf passed two MOTs at 2 differant places with all the faults listed in my WHAT DO I DO NOW thread.

Somehow think they not really going to worry about the speedo

Got a BMW sitting on the drive that's been in this country for 5 or 6 years the speedo is in Kmph and it's never been picked up at MOT yet.

There are two parts to this question...

                    1. What is a legal requirement and...
                    2. What is covered by an MOT test.

As already stated, the construction & use regulations (law) state that the speedo must show MPH.

However, it is NOT part of the MOT test to check for this.

Thats my point I know its a C&UR requiremnt - but there many C&UR requirements that are not MOT requirements.

Alun, it would be great if you could get the link

                      Thanx all

This link is to an on-line copy of the MOT Testers Manual... you WILL NOT find any instruction to check the speedo for MPH... trust me - I've looked!

Just to put the cat among the pidegons,if the vehicle was
involved in an accident and it was found that inappropriate
use of speed was a major factor in the accident, would the
insurance be invalid as the vehicle could be seen as not type
                          approved for use on U.K.roads?
As we all know that your insurance company are very good in
taking your money BUT they will try to wriggle out of any
                          claim if the could??????????
                          Just a thought Chris

What about being fit for purpose under consummer law - after all if it is sold for use in the UK (with an MOT) it must be required to be a legal vehicle

                              Poppy / Wolf,

You might both be right in your two previous posts... however, the original question, which was asked as a check on the honesty of the dealer, was - Is a MPH speedo required for an MOT?

The answer to that question is - No.

                              Cheers, Alan
