Rustproofing ???

Now I have my shiny new Surf sitting on the drive I am wondering whether to have it properly rustproofed as I intend to keep it for six years or so. I understand that the factory rustproofing in Japan is not up to UK spec. Anyone know of any companies in the North West who could do this? Also if anyone has had rustproofing done professionally I would be interested to know how much it costs ?
P.s. still looking for a nice spare wheel cover if anyone knows where to get one from. Andrew

Congrats on the newly acquired Surf...........good choice.

Cheetham Garage on Halifax Street (Nr Stanley Park) 01253 765261, will do a full waxoyl (spelling?????) under body spray for about £20-£30, they get it up on the post lift and give it a right good going over. You will need to phone them and book it in, but they will only do it if it's been dry for quite some time beforehand.

Are you sure about this??! That is an EXCELLENT price indeedy. Most of the Landy places charge circa £400 for the job!

Just a 5l can of Waxoyl is about £20.

I am just down the road from B'Pool (Preston) and will be getting my mo'cheen in about 2 weeks. Might be worth getting this done again, in a few months, if the price is right.

I was quoted £15-£20 last year for getting my Probe waxed ooooeeeeeeeerrrrrr.
Never actually got round to getting it done because they were very busy, so the £20-£30 is a presumption, but I know they ain't dear.

Will give them a bell next week and get a definate price.

The truck needs to be steam cleaned and allowed to dry before it can be rustproofed then most companies use a sprayed water dispersant to speed up the process. It takes around 10 litres of Waxoyl to do the whole car which you are going to pay more than the retail price for if its supplied as part of a service.

You're also looking at 3 or 4 hours labour to remove trim, shields and mask up parts like brakes tyres and exhaust then replace and unmask after the rustproofing has been applied. The actual spraying takes a couple of hours and its usual to valet the car afterwards so you'd have to estimate at least 6 hours labour.

No one is going to rustproof a car the size of a Surf for less than £200 and very few companies are going to do it properly anyway

Elvz is right, the calculations coincide with mine. *But* spending £20 for real WAXOYL, might be worthwhile, just to get them to spray it into specific areas of the vehicle - basically into areas that you specify and as a top-up between the major sprayjobs.

I used to Waxoyl my Landie - its a frikkin sponge, probably used enough gunk to keep an entire oil terminal happy.

You guys can do it yourselves if you like - get thee down to machine mart and get a shutz spraying gun, then swing by Halfords for a fair few cans of Waxoyl. Buy a few bottles of White spirit and a length of Damp-Proof coursing at B&Q. Hire or buy a 25 - 50l Compressor with an output matching what is needed for the schutz gun.

Pick a rainy day so that the bottom of the vehicle has had a good soak - then spray clean thoroughly. drive home and park on the DPC and wait for the car to dry overnight in garage if need be.

Thin the Waxoyl so that it cycles thru the gun, then stick some old clothes on and git sprayin'. Close all windows and watch over spray (wipe off with White spirit) No ciggies or sparks, take off the battery if you want, and maintain good ventilation. The vehicle will be ready to drive within hours of spraying - it will pong, but this will ease up.

DPC is the damp proof coursing, (Big sheet of thick polyvinal) used as a waterproof mat on the floor for the drips, as you dont want waxoyl on your driveway, garage floor or on the road in front of your house, cos that stuff can spread for miles and will stink.

Did the waxoyl myself recently. Put the car on some ramps with the driveway covered. Went to Halfords where they sell a kit that has a canister with pump and spray gun (about £20), may need two cans to cover the vehicle.

Masked off things like exhaust, brakes and drums etc...and got goin.

Left overnight and Bobs your uncle..

PS as mentioned where some old clothing, and a hat. Spend hours (exagerates) after in the shower trying to remove the wax as the water just runs off you like water off a ducks back

Cheap way is to use old engine oil and spray it everywhere - the downside is that is darn messy and drips for days etc (the DPC is a good idea) BUT it will get in all the nooks and cranies. If the is any dirt residue on the truck, the oil will penetrate through it whereas Waxoil will just cover it

Very true, I have done this before. I am a bit wiser and nervous about its carcinergic properties, so I put a stop to it. I believe a lot of 4X4 owners do still use it though, with decent results. It does tend to get washed off easily, but you do get a fresh supply evey 6 months.

Another positive side to Waxoyl, is that it comes in Black or Clear, this allows you to use the clear stuff in the engine bay so that you can work in it, without having to guess wire colours thru the Goo.

Waxoyl is also excellent for the following property: its SELF HEALING

If you get a scratch or a stone chip that pentrates the waxy layer, the wax will liquify slightly during your next run and flow into the scratch so its sealed off again. This is not so in the case of the modern spray-and-forget plastic underbody seals which actually promote rusting by allowing it to propagate under the "protective layer" which will remain wet and warm, maximising the rust.

There's a guy in Newbury who specialises in waxoyling classic cars - he's not cheap (about £400 for a large car) but he seems VERY thorough
