having had a 2.4 2gen a 3.0 3gen and now a 3.0 2gen i would say if you want a road biased 4x4 then go for a 3gen all day long. more powerful, more refined, better handling, better mpg and a lift up tail gate
Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

Given that I have a 2nd gen 2.4, a 3rd gen 3.0 is something I aspire to own one day!

lol wait till I print this of for Shirley to have a read at.

                  Your so fuced big fella

To the original poster, I have had 2nd gen 3.0 and 3rd gen.
The 3rd gen feels more powerful has a more modern suspension and steering set up and a differant chassis.

I like both and would have eithere.

i'd say for road driving, the 3rd gen intercooled 3 is much better than the 2.4 2nd gen.
in terms of looks.... give me the 2nd gen.
not done any proper off-roading so cant say about that, but if i had to choose, i'd probably got 2nd gen for off roading, just because it feels bigger, higher, more clearance... and because its cheaper, i'd not much care about a bit of damage, which i would on the 3rd gen....
