thing is, a LR is designed to tow 3500kg, so everything is built to suit, a Surf is built to tow 1500kg, so everything is built to do that.

The nice thng about a Surf is it only takes a AFT cooler to make it happily tow much more, and a LR just falls apart around you.

Right, enough of this 'Surf bashing'!

3.0's are NOT 'prone to overheating'. Surfs with rads full of sh1t, or poorly maintained cooling systems are prone to overheating. The rad on a 3rd gen looks superficially lightweight compared to an OEM 2nd gen rad, and the basic engine design is the same so why would it be better than a 2nd gen, age aside?

And finally... the head on a 3.0, be it a 2nd or a 3rd gen, is NOT any more prone to cracking than any other similar vehicle of the same age. I still maintain that a 3.0 properly maintained throughout its life with be trouble free. It's down to the buyer to spot signs of abuse, cheap non-OEM parts, dirty coolant, leaks etc. If the truck has been properly looked after, it will be sound. Simples

hehe, frm someone who abandonded their truck for a girl-pants car, that quite a rant.

Joking aside, I done just as many Pajaro heads this year as Surfs, and share a unit with a garage and they do loads of heads, BMW''s seem to be expecially popular, and the usual mix of others. Its a high stress component, that why cleaning/checking/and correct installation are madesuch a big deal out of in manuals.

I've done 3rd Gen heads, LC Colorado heads to, its the luck of the draw, age of the car and abuse of the previous owner.

I've repeatedly got our 3.0 2nd Gen hot towing silly heavy trailers around, and she still is sound. So you can't point at a particular flaw in the 3.0 heads, or ours would have popped long ago.

Any car you let hot runs the risk of damaging the head, its life. RAd seal actually works suprisngly well sometimes, it will often work for ages, or untill you flush the cooling system and renew the coolant, then all of a sudden you have a cracked head, it runs out of water and then overheats. I hate doing the coolant flushes on freshly bought/imported truck when doing a Full Service for this very reason! always waiting for a phone for a few days from the client after picking truck up, its terrible for my nerves....

I had a 3.0 2nd gen up to a few weeks ago when the engine blew on it.I have abused that truck off road and on road.I have pull close to 3.5t up a welsh mountain and the truck still went on.I habve had the atf warning light on and the temp in the red on quite a few occassions and it still went on for abuse.I never serviced this truck properly for a good 2 years and when i did a full service on it the ruddy engine blew.My truck cost 5k nearly 6 yrs ago but i used the truck for what it was designed for.Bushwhacker put a pic of my old rad up while it was clogged with mud.Yes i did get the temp up while towing but i adjusted the driving to get the temp down again or i pulled over to allow it to cool for a short while.
However when the engine finally gave up i bought a 1998 3rd gen which is great for towing and better than the 2nd gen.I miss the old truck but as i need something for towing long distance the 3rd gen is great
