auto help please

just got my first surf shes a 2.4td 1991 the problem i have is when i put her in drive and pull away it seems to be in second but if i move the stick to 1 st it pulls away very well . changes through rest of box with no knocks or surges. is this common or am i special.

Sounds a bit special to me. I would go back and have a word with the dealer before the ink dries on the warranty.
When you say it seems to be in second, do you mean that it seems a little sluggish and that you get super accelleration by pulling away in first, then slipping into drive? That is a technique I use for pulling away on hills with the caravan.
Try selecting ECT mode. This mode holds each gear a little longer for better accelleration.
I'm sure someone else will have a more informed opinion.

thanks for the info .i got it cheep and now im finding out why ill get it sorted in the end .if i can buy lots of bits

chechk the colour of the auto box fluid it should be nice a nice pinkish red colour if it is brown then it needs to be changed and that might help sounds as if the gears are ok but it could be that it wont engage 1st on its own which would need looking at by a specialist.
