  • Junked the EGR system today

    And not before time too.

    I followed this:

    http://daemon4x4.org/portal/articles.php?rid=6

    and this:

    http://toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/egr.htm

I got myself a couple of small pieces of steel plate from fleabay, cut them to size and blanked off either end of the EGR pipes. Took the whole gubbins off as described via the first link.

There is no way it should have taken me almost 8 hours to do but it was an absolute nightmare trying to find anything in my dad's garage! Drill bits, drill, angle grinder, dremel, dremel bits, vacuum tube, exhaust gasket sealant... each bit seemed to take an absolute eternity to find.

Anyways - got it all done eventually. For someone who never worked on a car before I got the Surf I'm actually pretty proud of myself for starting to actually do stuff on it. I used to maintain motorbikes that I owned but working on the Surf is tons easier than trying to muck around with a bike.

All seems to be working well - most bizarre difference is that it sounds alot quieter than before I took the EGR system off.

I'll report back in a few days to let people know if I've noticed anything else since the EGR has gone...

I'm thinking of doing this to mine while the head is off and it's all easy to get to. How unstuck am I going to get with vacuum pipes and electrics following 2.4 instructions on my 3 litre?
      it's in me shed, mate.
