Got a feeling thats been the way for a while. We had one in our Defender 130 at work for when towing a big box trailer full of kit.

Dunno, but it's been 3 years since I worked there, and it was on the Landy for several years before I left.

Always has been, but only for business use, you can drive anything you are licenced to drive with no tacho if its private use.

Our Toyota pickup at work (2004) has a sticker on the dash saying that a tacho might be required, blah, blah, blah.

Trailers are a mistery to me and, as this suggests, other people too!
I've had my licence 4 years and so need a specific trailer licence, but does this proclude me from towing at all or is the test for trailers over a certain size? Basically occasionally I'd like to tow one of those tiny trailers for clearing rubbish etc., can I or not? The police don't seem to be able to tell me!

              [Sorry to hijack your thread!]

              Thanks,

              Ray.

Check your licence. It will tell you which classes of vehicle you can drive....

That would be A, B, B1 and fkp.
So that means no trailers at all? Not even a tiny one?

You can tow a trailer that weighs no more than 750 kg with a vehicle with a Maximum authorised mass up to 3500kgs
                    or
Example of category B with a trailer weighing over 750 kg: Motor vehicle with an unladen weight of 1,500 kg and a maximum weight of 2,000 kg towing a fully loaded trailer with a weight of 1,500 kg – total weight 3500

you can tow what you like so long as you dont exceed the train weight for that vehicle.

a little harder to do with cars as they dont generally have weight limits......or do they

all vans and lorries have mam weights and train weights. (by train weight i mean the combined weight of vehicle and trailer, not the weight of the vehicle on a train as a friend of mine thought!)

im presuming the surf has a limit, i havent bothered to check inside the door frame yet to find out. usually 1000kgs or 1500kgs for a 4x4.

Not quite correct I'm afraid ...

If you've only passed your test comparitively recently then you'll find that you're restricted to what you can tow unless you take the towing test. I can't be @rsed to look up the detail cos it doesn't affect me !

And if you can find a manufacturers towing limit for the Surf then you're a bleeding marvel

Life is too important to take seriously !

If you got you're licence before 1 January 1997, you can tow a vehicle and trailer combo up to 8.25 tonnes MAM, after that you can only tow a 750kg trailer unless you pass the extra trailer test.

There isn't any max towing weight anywhere on the data plate for a 2nd Gen Surf, 4Runners are 2200kg, or 1500kg, depending on who you listen to.
