Alloys for the weight savings.... it all adds up (mainly use my truck for camping so it's always fully loaded - every little helps)

Can someone go an weigh a steel wheel, then an alloy of the same size? I bet the difference is a few kilos. On a truck that weighs a few thousand, and tyres that can weigh 50 (try getting a 33" Mudzilla on to the rear spare mount!!), its in the noise!

Nah, I met him last year. He's a good foot taller than that.

I'll weigh mine before I whack em on. I wont have them for a while though.

I had alloys with muds on, and steels with ATs on for a while. When swapping over, there wasn't a huge difference in weight (subjectively speaking - I never weighed them) and the muds were smaller.

Yes yes, I know its traditionally the wrong way round, but the ATs were used for laning more than the muds.

Right, only got 31's but just weighed a 31 10.5 on a hilux steel wheel, 5 stone 2 3/4 lbs,

31 10.5 on an alloy split rim 4 stone 1/4 lbs.

Difference of 16 1/2 lbs per wheel. Multiply by 5 (inc. spare) and you get 82 1/2 lbs, or approx 37 1/2 kilos.

That's a fair bit of weight to lug around.

Sorry the tyres weren't the same brand but it's all I had lying around.

                    Cheers,
                    Rob.

Like carrying a kiddie around in the truck? (OK, its rotating mass, but hey...)

I doubt its going to kill you TBH. In fact I doubt there'll be any measurable difference - and when you're talking 23-25mpg anyway...

If it makes you feel any better, I dont really think people with alloys are gayboys, I'm just jealous of Linda's Mickey T's

Well you can go outside next time and weigh them..... As I said for me it all adds up and as you know when going up a mountain in Spain and watching your temp gauge rise every weight saving helps. I don't really care about mpg, just whether the engine survives or not.

And just for the record I would have happily chucked a 5 year old out of my truck on them hills if it would have helped

but thats important, it is rotating mass, which is a huge drain on usable power, its also unsprung weight, which has a huge effect on suspension performance, on and offroad.

Our Westfield mag had a piece on lightening flywheels, and 1kg of metal removed from the flywheel had the same effect of loosing 10's of Kg's of car weight, especially in high gears.

they would be gayboy wheels if I cleaned them and had 1" of rubber wrapped round them, but luckily, I don't, and they have 33's on them as proved by pics, so I'm perfectly happy...

If I could afford alloys for the pitbulls on the 4Runner I would have them in a shot as the steels even heavier than the figures posted, but for 15x12" wheels? don't think so

Wishbone - I didn't have a 5 year old with me or I would have gladly told him to walk up and meet us at the top
