  • coolant flush

I want to flush the current coolant and replace it with some decent stuff this coming weekend. I don't know what is in there right now, but understand you cannot mix the coolants? I was thinking of buying this from roughtrax - http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=164&vid=1270

Whats the difference between the red and green? I just have blue in mine where it has been topped up just now.

Also what's the best way to flush the current coolant out? I was just going to remove the top hose and use a garden hose to pump water in, and use the drain plug on the rad to drain the water out, but how do I flush the heater matrixes? (Matri?)

What is going to happen if I don't managed to clear all of the current coolant (unknowingly) and then put brand new red coolant in?
    Cheers

You were right, either matrixes or matrices is fine.

Blue and green mix OK, it's just red that's different. Red is better quality and has a longer life. Halfords is where I buy mine.

As for flushing, the way I do it differs from the way others do, so I'll let the rest tell you their method.

I done mine a couple of weeks ago. Took off the top hose. removed the Thermostat and stuffed a hose down all holes!
Put it back together and filled with water. run it for ten mins still topping up.
Then I repeated the whole procedure just to be sure.

I'm just concerned that in my engine bay it says TOYOTA LONG LIFE COOLANT. But inside it's blue.

What happens when they mix? Do they become corrosive? Or do they just not perform correctly?

They don't mix. Think Lava Lamp.

Ah ok cheers, so it doesn't matter a great deal if there is a small amount not flushed.

Next question is - whats the capicity of the cooling system? i.e. how much of the stuff do I need to buy? (I'm just using that fancy forum search now)

                    Just over 10L, so a full 5L of anti-freeze.

Cheers. I'm probably going to buy the premixed stuff.

Waste of money and not concentrated enough (IMHO).

If it aint been done before (or at least not to your knowlage) i'd give it a real good flushing, rad hoses both ways, heater, rear heater, turbo cooler pipes, load of work but worth it, got loads of red gunge from the rear heater pipes, in fack it blew the hose out it was so blocked, took a couple of goes, next strip down i'm gonna fit a bypass on the rear heater takeoffs as it's sod all use, less to block up,
Albanach's secret method is he gets someone else to do it

I didn't think about the turbo cooler pipes. These are quiet thin though aren't they? How did you get them flushed?
I am going to give it a good old flush out. May be start her up for a few minutes and pump some fresh clean water around before draining and flushing again. Cheers for the tips!
