  • Changing Oil

    I'm changing my oil and filter this weekend.
    I chacked the FAQ but their was nothing.

    I think I know what I need to do.
    Including putting the sump plug back in before I put the new oil in.

    I have a few questions;
    1. Can I get an oil filter from Halfords, is it a standard one ?
    2. How much oil will come out ?
    3. How much oil should I put in ?
    4. What sort of oil should I use ?
    5. Is there anything not obvious I need to know ?

    Recently changed oil/filter

    1. Halford can get 'em but at £19 a pop expensive. Milners offroad (website in the threads here somewhere) do them cheaper.
    2. About 5-6 litres
    3. Same as came out..get 5 litre plus 1 litre oil cans. Fill up to top of dipstick mark, run for a while allow to settle and re-check don't overfill.
    4. 10-40W type part synthetic or fully synthetic diesel engine oil is best (I'm informed). The more you pay the better the oil (generally)
    5. Remove the plastic covers and remove the metal plate cover (4 bolts) in wheel arch behind offside front tyre . Its THE only way to get the filter out - believe me I've tried others before I found this plate. Watch out cos the filter holds a lot of oil. Don't overtighten the filter when putting the new one in (good hand tight should do). Clean the gasket surface on the engine block where the new rubber gasket on the filter will seal. Read the filter fitting instructions for more info.

    You may want to add an oil treatment for turbo engines when refilling, up to you. Can also put in an engine flush to the old oil and run for 10-15 minutes before draining...supposed to remove sludge, again up to you

    Good luck

      My 1990 2.4 uses the same filter as the hilux pick up, so is available from most motor place.
