The ebayer is correct. Its only because customs don't wanna lose out on hitting the owner for the extra tax they can nab you for by bending their own rules. If the car is imported on a 96 plate but made outside the EU, then whichever year its presented for first registration will be the year it will be plated, hence nabbing you for the extra tax, sneaky & sly.

Really? So how come all of ours are plated showing the year of manufacture rather than the year of import?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Looks like someone made a balls up at some point in the registration process. Looks like a nice Surf as well...

Regardless, I'd walk away. Chances of changing the details with the DVLA are slim to none and there are enough Surfs out there to find another. You never know what the gubmint will do that'll end up screwing you over. Fair enough they'll do that anyway but it saves it happening unnecessarily!

There was a thread on here somewhere about it. Someone was trying to get a Surf registered on import, but customs wouldn't register it on year of manufacture only on year of first presentation. The chap getting it done has to pay £400 a year for his tax disc. Its all come about since the government changed the vehicle excise duty.Say if you imported a '98 surf today & presented it for re-registration, it would be given a 2010 plate. Stupid I know, but thats their rules with regards to imports outside the EU.
