  • just bought hilux

    hi everyone newbie here, ive just bought a hilux surf 1995 3litre td ssr-x limited edition. am i right in thinking its second gen? if so how do i get it out of 4WD

    Hello ! Congratulations on your aquisition, have you found the 4wd button on the smaller of the two sticks ? and have you set the smaller stick to 2wd ? Have fun !

      Hello. 2nd gen tailgate drops. 3rd gen lifts. Press button on side of small lever to switch 4wd on/off. Its ok to drive a 3rd gen on the road in 4wd. Nasty things will happen if you put a 2nd gen in 4wd on the road.
      If your not sure, I can explain exactly what buttons to press and when.

        hi thanks for your answers im still a little confused car was first registered oct 1995 its hilux 3 litre ssr-x limited ed we had to drive it from manchester to bolton for mot and the mechanic says its stuck in 4wd and doesnt know how to get it into 2wd. ive looked on web and it says if reg after aug 95 its 3rd gen hubby says tailgaite drops(but i dont know if he has actually tried it!)

                  DO NOT drive on road in 4wd unless its a slippy, icy or snow covered surface and only then can you use 4H which is the button on the side of the wee stick.
                  It is possible to do this up to 40mph but a lower speed would be wiser
