Did you get this sorted then? IS it stuck in 4wd? (Jack the front end. If the wheel spins, its not stuck in 4wd. (or it is, and sumits broke )
Its not ideal, but if it is stuck in 4wd, and youve got to use it, pull the front hub caps of, and theres a round black thing with a big domed silver cap in the middle? (Im assuming you dont know whats what here, sorry if thats not the case) Take this off, then it can be used without causing damage. Can be a bugger to get off, give it a whack round the bolts with an oversize socket or something.

hi everyone and thanks for your replies. we bought the truck of an old friend who bought it 5 years ago had a row with his wife over it and there its stayed until a divorce was looming lol. anyways basically the car hasnt moved for well over 2 years, weve got it out of 4wd thanks to john and a mechanic who we have used for years(we had paj then challenger imports) mot'd it serviced it and all that needed was a couple of rubber bushes and an exhaust. the mechanic says weve got a great buy(apparently its got some sort of mega suspension and shockers on it!!!) do othr surfers go greenlaning?. we are also using it to tow our caravan to devon at easter.
thanks

Effectively because there is only a transfer box and not a diff linking front and rear wheels, when you're in 4WD the front wheel speed is locked to the rear wheel speed, and when you corner / have the slightest size difference between front and rear tyres due to wear etc you put strain on the drive system.
Its exactly the same reason you have diffs between left and right wheels - to allow for differences in wheel speed between them.
