  • 4Runner clutch problem.HELP

:Hi everyone Im new on this forum and was sent here from Roughtrax.I have a uk spec 4runner 3.0 with the normal clutch. Before xmas the clutch pedal was loosing some feel and got worse to the point were it wouldnt engage gear properly,I bled the system and all was fine but its slowly got worse again. It seems to be getting air in the system, there are no leaks or loss of fluid.Has anyone else had this problem?
I am wondering if a new flexible pipe would be the answer, before I go shelling out for master/slave cylinders or does anyone know any thing different.
    Your veiws would be welcome.

First up, I have to say I haven't got any experience of this sort of thing on 4runners, surfs or indeed any car!

However, over the last 20 years of working on motorbikes when I've had a problem like this it's usually been down to leaking joints in the hydraulic system. Given the improvement in a braking system I've always changed old rubber pipes to braided steel ones (be wary to get stainless fittings too - anodised ones tend to corrode quite badly and crack) as a matter of course in this situation - not sure how much difference it would make to a clutch.

It'd probably be worth stripping and cleaning pistons and changing (possibly perished) rubber seals there too.

Be sure to use fresh copper washers on everything too.

I'm sure someone with more experience with Surf/4runner clutches will be along with more accurate advice soon!

I would think it has more to do with either the slave or the master cylinder than the hose if you can not see any leaks.

        cluch probs

It is more than likley to be the slave cylinder you will find that the rubber seals will need to be replaced if you can get a repair kit it is a farly easy job just a bit messy!.

you can check the master by looking at the fluid and get sombody to pump the pedal if you see air bubbles then it is also knackered

if you can get repair kit's for both i would recon the pair broken or not if one is knackered the outher is usaly not far behind! and refill with new clean fluid !!

while you are under the truck have a look at your cluch fork and make sure it moves freely if not grese and clean it up

        Enjoy !!
