  • Greasing prop shafts

I fitted some new suspension ball joints on Tuesday, went on nicely and filled up with grease just like they're meant to.

I then tried grease the front prop shaft (rear one is off in bits just now) and on every bit, the grease just came out around the nipple, like the gun wasn't sealing on properly.

    Does this mean:
    1. The nipples are wrecked (cleaned and checked them and they looked fine)
    2. The gun isn't working right (but it filled the new bits grand)
    3. The joints are already full of grease?
    4. Other?

Even if the joints are full, grease will still get past the seals. That's how you know you have fresh grease in them, pump until the new grease comes out the seal.

The nipples are probably knackered. There are supposed to be wee caps on them to keep dirt out. When I was on the tools, we used to change the nipples every year at the truck's annual service.

I had the same problem last weekend but found that the grease went in if you applied a bit of pressure while you pump. I was using a flexible hose which helped.
