made it ok, 12mile there and back to get son to work, 20 mph all the way but im concerned that im not useing the 4wd drive option properly. I could do with a "how to breifing" and whats alll the diff lock threads about, are mine now locked or somthing ?

If you have managed to drive that distance without 4wd then thats ok.
Don't use 4wd on dry tarmac only use it on slippery surfaces.
Basically press the 4wd button on the lever and you should get 4wd ok.If not then you may need to go to/fro a few feet for it to engage.
Don't worry to much about the other threads about lockers etc unless you have got free wheeling hubs fitted then you just need to make sure they are in the lock position

Hi Storm,
All i did was push the button on the 4wd stick but left it in high,(there and back, 24mile round trip at 20mph) had the green light on the dash lit. Is there (not in the snow) a max speed that you can travel at with the green light lit ?
Should it only be engaged in a certain gear(p or n) or can i flick it on and off while travelling?
Havent a clue if ive got free wheeling hubs, its a k reg ln130 auto. Depending how bad the snow gets on the roads, should i ever select 4low or only if im stuck.
Getting thru the snow now a prob at mo, but does 4w low give any better traction on the road. ?
thanks
I find if I lift my foot of the throttle for a couple of secs helps, both for selecting and de-selecting 4wd, (on the third gen.) via the button that is, I've never tried manual low/high, came close a couple of times with 'tin tent on last week 'though!
as I understand it traction is tyre dependant - on that note we have a bit of the white stuff at the mo, bout 8", have got a set of grabber a/t s on steels to help going to take of the h/t as got stuck yesterday, they are a bit narrower being off a pickup which should help a bit but any sugestions as to tyre pressure or anything else and what experiances have you guys and girls had out there in snow with A/Ts
have driven 4x4s in snow before but not the surf and want to get the best I can out of it as I might have to run old peoples carers about!
TIA

Im only concerned with on road travel in the snow at the momment, Dont even go to the Tin Box with the stickon tent area, the wife overloads the caravan so much i need a JCB not a surf LOL.
Just for anyone wondering why a novice is even trying to get out in this snow, my son works at the meat factory in Merthyr but is employed by an agency, point one
no show , no pay
point two
no show, poss no job next day.
Even im not dull enough to travel to Dowlais Top (for those familiar with Merthyr) in this weather, but a job is a job, and agency workers from Poland are queing for work there.
Pleasekeep the info coming, handy for future ref even if this snow clears by tomorrow AM.

as stormy said, all u need to be sure of is u dont use 4wd when you are on dry/grippy surface, put it in 4wd with the switch under 20mph(i think u can go higher but i air on side of caution)and same for coming back out of 4wd,shouldnt need low unlessd your stuck or your in a very hairy situation
the rule is if snow on the ground then press the 4wd button if no snow just wet tarmac then no 4wd. only use 4wd on loose surface such as snow gravel mud etc. no need for 4wd on main roads that are clear from snow this could damage your truck if done for a long distance. low 4wd is for steep hills etc more off road than in the snow, low range is not going to help much in the snow.

as long as the surface is loose then you can go any speed you want! just dont use 4wd on tarmac even wet tarmac. you can engage 4wd up to about 40-50mph i think. but if your brave enough you could do 70 - 80mph once 4wd is selected.
Only engage 4wd button under 20mph
Try not to exceed 50 - 60 mph while in 4wd.
Switch off 4wd if road clears for even a short distance.(ruduceing speed to under 20mph before switching off.)
Only use 4wd low if stuck in a landslide or such like (do not drive far in 4wd low)
