Tyre Question - Not the usual one!

For those people put 33's onto their trucks, I have a question. Why do you go for a 12.5" wide tyre instead of a 10.5" one?

The only reason I ask is because I assume that most of those that go for a 33" tyre do it for better ground clearance, so that the truck performs better off road - seems logical to me. However, and from what I have read in the mags and on the net, most people that play seriousley offroad in the mud go for a taller tyre - some even 35" - BUT they keep the width to a relative minimum (10.5")in order to 'cut' through mud rather than sit on it. Again, it seems logical to me!

If that's the case, surely a 33 x 10.5 tyre would be a better choice for us to use both on or off road, and it would probably lessen the chance of the tyre rubbing on the wheel arches?

Do you want to cut through the mud, or float on top of it.

I have 33x14.5's on my truck, :-)

You downside of breaking through the crust to find more solid ground is you often end up sitting on your axles in goop before the tyres reach it.

A fatter tyre is far less damaging to the ground you're driving over.

Serious Comp people seem to prefer skinner pizza cutter tyres, but how many people are that involved, and do that sort of offroading?

I have 33-55-15...
But it don't mean nuffin.......
I did have 12.5 wide tyres on the old surf, and they did way less damage.
And of course they look way cooler
