Back to the point. There is certainly such a thing as a BIOS virus and I suppose one could potentially alter voltages etc. Last time I built a computer, voltages were set physically using jumpers rather than the BIOS but I suppose there could be some new-fangled way of doing it.

Frying the motherboard sounds unlikely though, as does sending a spike through the internet. You would need to get a virus on to the machine somehow and most antivirus software would block it.

Someone told me I couldn't copy a CD of his because it had anti-copy software on it which would make my CD writer 'burn out' the disk if I tried.

Offer to send a copy of the disc/file or whatever to one or more of the experts on here so they can check it out - if they're wrong then they'll fry their machine and you'll be proved right.
