    Hi GWH,

    My motherboards have bios selectable voltages that will power different chips within the range.. ie: some P4's take xV, others will take yV.. You can change this in the bios (It helps people who overclock their pc's)

    So yes, there is provision on ~some~ boards to do this. MattF will know better than me though as I only dabble enough to 'get by' with my pc's.

    Your job sounds pretty interesting btw.

    I use a lot of 24 v control via an hmi scada system. This is windows based control for an industrial application, in effect a 3 phase computer. The only way to induce a power spike would be to replace the 300amp fuses in the mains incomer for about 1000 amp and hope that the wiring wouldn't melt, before the processor melted. This is exactly what you would need to do with a home computer.
    There is just to much"fail safe" stuff in the way.
    Dude - take a quick look around you - is there a door, does it lead to the 'outside'?

    You should open it and pop out there.....

    I was actually mulling that one over earlier. I'd personally say not, but as to whether it's possible in reality could be a different thing. I would think that the BIOS itself will contain failsafes to prevent any such thing happening. It may be possible to cause a temporary shutdown by altering certain parameters and taking something out of it's accepted range, but actually damaging any motherboard components, I'd personally say not.

    I'm always willing to be proven wrong if there's evidence to suggest otherwise, however.

    You're missing what Graham is saying. Why do you thing they are called regulated power supplies? Everything is regulated electronically through fixed value components and feedback circuits. You cannot alter a fixed output source without physical acces to the unit to change those fixed value components, feedback circuits and the incorporated protection circuitry.
