I have found a white solid in a filter after using bio. It was fairly hard or 'shaley' like crushed shells and I wondered if it was some sort of calcerous material perhaps used in filtering, or maybe settled out of the fuel. Might even have been scale from water thats got into the tank over the years freed by the use of bio.

George, maybe the sand was some of the stuff you mixed in the paint for your floor

It wasn't actually crushed shells, just had that sort of consistency.

Sounds like Catalyst dust? But I'm pretty sure Diesel doesn't see any of that. My thoughts are still that it's coming from the truck/car rather than the fuel production or storage.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

i used asda diesel for 2 years the filter was full of white sand about 2 ounce
i found this sand in morrisons too when i used there diesel but no where near as much has asda
there was no sand in red? why?
I buy a large amount of Gas Oil (as you call red) for mobile and fixed plant and the only difference between Gas Oil and diesel apart from the colour is the sulphur content, but we are not talking much here in ppm nothing that an engine or you would notice, if you had crap in your red it was just the way it had be stored by your source.

i believe tesco's did import fuel a few years ago, dunno if its still done these days though. probably a viable option really seeing as north sea is the most expensive place in the world to produce hydrocarbons!

but aye, most of it comes from the same processing plants, just in different tankers.

                          so....
they sell it cheaper so you can run plant with it, but basically its the same?
They add red colourant to be able to see if you use it in a road vehicle. is that about right?

Needless to say the supermarket's packs are less sophisticated than the premium brands !

Not entirely true, my missus used to work for Q8 and they used to supply (as well as receive) fuel from BP, tesco sainsburys etc (basically whoever had supply close to the transportation) and they just pumped it in as the "additives" are added at source not at the pump.
