      Only the 2.4 turbo diesels.
The engine/head is used in other Jap vehicles.

      British spec 4Runners are 3.0.

so when a 3.L head goes its for a different reason than the 2.4 ?

As far as I know, yes.
The 3.0 has an alloy head on an iron block.

pretty bad that a car company as big as toyota have two engines that self destruct in the same way .

No, they crack too. Probably because they overheated.

Oh, a disagreement. Maybe we should send someone round to give eachother a kicking?

But....If we didn't import them, we wouldn't have known and would be driving Discoveries.

I thought the 3.0L heads were cracking too? What is their failure mode?

the head thing. did it not start showing up in most engines when they were like 8 years plus old???

not really a biggy is it. plus there's enough good 2.4's out there because they've been serviced well enough to never overheat.

                        bye now.
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

They are, but it's probably to do with poor maintenance in their previous life than poor head design like the 2.4.
3.0 engines do seem to suffer more with gasket failure though rather than just the heads cracking all the time.

That does seem to be the common denominator. I wonder if the previously overheated 3.0l Surfs will be next?

Ah, I stand corected. Didn't realise the gaskets failed too.
