the company car the wife drives has to go back, so looks like she will be driving my surf, so i will have to get her a sat-nav, what would you recommend. garmin-tomtom ect only need U.K. maps, but would be good to use as G.P.S. as well. cheers JIM.

Not sure what you mean. Satnav IS GPS - or should I say 'uses the GPS system'.

I've always had Garmin. They are *the* satnav company really, and I can say I've never had any trouble. You dont get the bells and whistles you get with the others, just plain and simple navigation, but totally reliable and accurate.

Garmin, i still have the first Street pilot which has bells and whistles, and I use a 'Nuvi' for everyday use. Go to other continents and just change the card.

The ones dedicated to outdoor pursuits have that facility. Not sure about car based ones. You can however use the NMEA output from a car based one to drive a laptop with memory-map.

for general door to door navigation and OS maps youd be looking at a PDA device with a built in GPS receiver. you can then install one of a number of door to door applications such as TomTom Navigator, Garmin XT etc then you can get Memory Map for the OS side.

i dont know of any applications that does both and im not familiar with any stand alone devices that do both either.

i guess it depends on the person using it and the type of places they go and how much direction they need.

Someone going to a city address in a city they don't know then the tomtom with lane guidence, tells you wich of the 9 lanes you should be in at the lights before suddenly telling you to turn right.

Garmin are truely the satnav kings, but mostly that title is earned from their sea-fairing products and not their entry level car navs; these are pretty much akin to tomtom in features and use, but without lane guidence.

You should only buy the likes of binatone and unheard of brands from ALDI and LIDAL, if your in the market for an expensive paper weight. They serve no other practical purpose.

I was forced into TomTom as it was the only system available for the 'bike at the time I bought it.

So I can only recommend what i 'know', so it's TomTom for me too.

Dont talk daft man! TomTom are a 'johnny come lately' satnav company, primarily software on 3rd party hardware. Garmin are one of the daddys of satnav ground equipment - literally!

Who's GPS is in military vehicles? Boats? Planes? You dont hear Ozzy Ozbourne calling out enemy troop locations or Homer Simpson flight levels do you? Jeez!
