  • boiler programmer question

I had to replace my heating programmer after 25 years of service.
The one I now have is a Honeywell ST9400A (supposedly the best for my purpose). All fitted and working, but I'm concerned that it gets quite warm to the touch in one corner...this happens as soon as its connected up (even when its only its own feeds connected)
Any of you heating guys come across this before?
    Is it normal?
What have I told you about thinking Erroll

is it an electronic one or the older type analogue?
In any case it shouldn't be getting too warm...
take the cover off and check that all the connections are tight.
With the power off, if it a mains one.

done that three/four times (its a new fangled digital type)
The old one got warm when it started playing up, which is another reason I'm asking.
Its a basic sytem, boiler/pump on/off and one zone valve for heating on/off but with only the (switched) mains connected it starts to warm up

have you checked the earth continuity? If not i would get a sparky in to test it all

If the heat is around the P.S.U area, (where the mains connections are, generally), I wouldn't worry too much. It will generate more heat in that area than anywhere else. What temperature do you class as hot/warm to the touch?

Yes I've tested the earth, wiring gumff actually sates that "earth point is provided if deemed necessary"...so Ive commected as I deemed it necessary. It may be normal and me being paranoid, cos theres no smell of burning/melting printed circuitry/

Matt, yes it is exactly at that point..I would compare it to the warmth of a laptop when its in use...if that makes any sense...With the programmer off the backing, theres no heat in the wiring (well theres no heat in the wiring period) the heat eminates from the programmer itself.

The earth point will only be there to termiate any earths in the cable, and for test purposes the unit is probably double insulated.
With most electronic equipment these days get warm, even quite hot!

If its in the corner, my thoughts are.....
Is the battery (for back up) in that corner, if so i wouldn't worry. When first plugged in it will charge the batt, this will probably result in a little extra heat to that area!

I don't know if thats where the battery is, but it apparantly uses a "non volatile memory" to store info....this morning it wasn't as warm, so it could be that.

Once again thanks everyone, I'm still awaiting honeywell to respond to my query after two days!
