  • Hello and what car questions

Thanks for the replies. think I get it now

I didn't realise my validation post would be posted to the public bit and assumed once that is out of the way I could create a new thread with the questions I had.

Anyway, moving on to the questions:
I have a bt of land and forest on the continent. In fact it's like a mini farm.
I currently run a Hyunday Galloper there (based on 1991 Mitsu Pajero I believe). It is sufficiently capable offroader and seems to be coping well with the mud, the snow an the slippery hills. It does feel rather ancient and despite being manufactured in 1999, seems to require a lot of TLC. What annoys me the most though, is that it is an absolute cow on tarmac. Constantly requiring steering input to go straight.

So I want to chop it in and get something better. Better being something that has some on road capability and does not fall apart from under you.

I originally wanted to get a Disco (circa 1996), but having done some research it may be even less reliable than the galloper.
Then I looked at Isuzu trooper and then at Toyota hilux surf.

The two biggest constraints I need to consider:
    1. Reliability. I have no access to proper garages over there but a very well equipped garage at home. So the repairs and servicing would need to be of DIY variety
    2. Price. I cannot properly import a right hooker there and therefore once the 12 month mot runs out, I will either chop it up and get it converted into a tractor or scrap it for pennies. Therefore I am reluctant to spend more than I have to. and Ideally under £2k

Of course as is usually the case, one always wants something just outside of one's budget and I would like a 3litre turbo diesel version with a bullbar and a towbar and remote central locking

    My questions are:
Will Hilux be the best bet for what I need it for
Are there any other reasonable alternatives I should consider?
How do I tell 2nd gen and 3d gen apart?
What to look out for when buiying a used hilux?

Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance for your responses!

Looks like there is a restriction on for new users.
I have just joined and wanted to get some help choosing a 4x4, but seems I have to post here first.
I know it's not my place to criticise, but come on mods, surely having to validate your email on registration is obstacle enough. Unless of course this is a secret society and you don't actually want your user base to grow too quickly.
    Just a friendly constructive criticism

the user validation was because there was a lot of spam and porn getting posted on here. This is a family forum and just about all of us don't want that sort of stuff on here, this is why you have to be validated by Koi first

Seen how many members there are? Over 21,000...

So, you want help choosing a 4x4, or help choosing a particular model of Hilux Surf?

being friendly or constructive are irrelevant on this site BTW

            Hi & welcome.

            Thanks for your comments.
You would have thought that validating your email address was enough, unfortunately it wasn't hence the way it is.
People still validated their email then posted links to porn sites, viagra sales and a whole host of other offensive material.
So thats why the posts get moderated first, it wasn't done for the sheer hell of it.
Its not a secret society and the user base grows just fine the way it is.
It would be more appropriate to ask the question why its this way than to assume validating an email address is enough. If it was a secret society and I didnt want the user base to grow your post certainly wouldn't be here now.
            Just a friendly answer.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Where is that that you are not allowed to register right hookers?

I know Kazakhstan have restricted their registration, where else?

                  Welcome BTW.

You shouldn't have a problem getting a 3.0 with towbar for less than £2k.

Most stuff is do-able by a competent home mechanic. Have a search. People have done pretty much everything up to head swaps, engine swaps etc etc.

how do you tell the diference between 2nd and 3d gen?

lastly, which one seems a better buy of the two?

Both of those are 2nd gens. The 2nd gen wasn't built in 1998 though. They changed to 3rd gen in 95 I think, so the first one is probably the date when it was imported.

2nd gen has fold down tailgate, 3rd gen has swing up tailgate. 3rd gen is more car like to drive, but you'll look for longer if your budget is £2k tops.

Neither are amazing value TBH. It should be possible to get a decent 3.0 for around £1500. If I was you, I'd look for a clean, standard 3.0 with lowish miles and signs that it gets serviced and hasn't been offroad. If you fit big tyres you run into the issues you've got now and it gets less relaxing to drive on the road.

If you're just driving on fields and tracks and not doing extreme offroading, a standard one with decent AT tyres will be fine and will retain its road manners.

                            Thanks for that Apache
are you suggesting I get a 2nd gen for £1500 ish?

It sounds good but apart from the £1700 one on ebay I cannot see anything else suitable nearby.

I called up about the 1998 one on autotrader and it's a 1994, which makes me think it is massively overpriced.

I got a couple of weeks before I need to buy one so I guess I can shop around.

What do you think about the actualy car choice though? I know this is a hilux forum and people are likely to prefer Hilux over any other 4x4, but it makes good sense to go for a hilux over a disco right?

It makes very good sense to go for Toyota, if reliability is a prime concern. Discos and the lr brand on general are good offroaders, but are let down IMHO by certain factors, comfort, reliability, build quality etc.
