hi all, i am having 4wd problems with my surf, when engaged the rear wheels are locking up and just dragging . is there anyone near the county durham area that could possibly have a quick look for me just to try and diagnose what is actually wrong with it ?

This may be a stupid question but .....

have you been using 4WD on normal road surfaces ?

Life is too important to take seriously !

Do you mean the rear wheels lock up as if the handbrake is on?

The two most likley things is a buggered transfer box OR the front diff ......

jack it up , put on axle stands (so all 4 wheels are off the ground)and see if both prop shafts turn , then disconnect the front one and see if the rear then turns whilst in 4wd this will tell if it's the diff or the box

and don't forget to turn the engine off to disconnect the front shaft

He's been told all this in his other thread? He wants someone to go look at it. Badly worded title.

yes bushwacker as if the handbrake is on.
i thought the description was very clear that i was asking someone near by who knows what they are looking at to have a quick look at the surf.
i will jack the vehicle up when it stops raining and post my findings, thanks for the help.

The title wasn't descriptive at all. "Help needed, County Durham area" would have been better.

                  Transfer case problem then.
Does the truck free-wheel with the transfer lever in neutral?

As Vince said, and I alluded to in your other thread, it's probably the transfer box.

I did say to him about posting here to see if anyone can look at his truck for him just to save him a large garage bill
Is it easy to just change the trans box or easier to swap the gearbox with trans box already fitted to it.I only normally sell the whole lot as i can't be bothere to split them

I saw you saying that Richard, but the title made it look like another question about the problem rather than a request for someone to actually look at it.

As far as I know, it's a pig to replace the transfer box while the gearbox is fitted.
