  • ATF fluid........

......in my previous experiances ATF fluid is best left alone. as long as it aint burned, and still has a good colour and smell.............leave be.

changing atf fluid often hightlights a worn gearbox or 'brings' on any weaknesses in the box.......for instance, remember my post the other day about my mates grand cherokee losing backwards gear?.........guess what. he'd changed the fluid 2 days around 70 miles before.

does anyone else think this way or am i talking sh1te again

    mick.

caution sh1te warning................i have changed the fluid on 2 cars in the past, and both cars where never the same afterwards,1 an E class, the other a 4x4, and if you peruse this forum, and others, you will see others that have started threads that read 'changed my atf and now problems' etc. my mate changed his and backwards fell out with the fluid. changing fluids is relatively straight forward, no mechanical intervention anywhere, cept for a drain plug. and look how many folk then encounter problems. i didnt suggest that changing the fluid causes problems, i merely suggested that changing the fluid can bring on/forward any failures you may have already had. this opinion is also followed by a couple of gearbox threads on other sights too.

most change there atf and no worries, but some do then find problems after a fluid change, why? all you have done is removed a drain plug and then topped up. take the guy in ireland on here, a current thread.

oh no, i just realised...............this could turn into a serious discussion

Could it be (and I talk from a serious lack of experience here)
that for novices especially they may be putting in the wrong amounts of fluid.

Had I not read up on here first I would have assumed that to replace the ATF you drain whats in there and fill up until the dipstick shows the correct level. I wouldn't for instance have realised that you should have the engine warm, runnign and move through the gears before checking levels.
As running too much OR too little ATF can be detrimental to the running of the vehicle, it could be that some of the problems you describe are due to this sort of situation.

I would also argue that you would have a LOT more problems across the board if noone replaced fluids ever.

No fear of that, seeing as it's complete bunkum.

I have never done an atf change yet but hope to on tuesday, haven't got any problems with it it's just that I don't know when the last owner changed it and I don't believe for one second that the garage did it when the vehicle was sold to them.
I really think that the problems your talking about was nailed by biosurf in post 6 as if I hadn't read through this site I would have done exactly as he says, drained and topped up and not checked with the engine running ect.
