What! How the hell can someone be sacked for not working non contracted hours for free?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

It seems that an employer can expect you to work a reasonable amount of unpayed overtime!
What they want and what they get are two very different things. When I was told at a place I worked that I was to work unpaid overtime that weekend I thought they were trying to wind me up. When I realised they were serious they were told no in no uncertain terms. I think I told the manager the last time I'd worked for nothing was when I painted our house or words to that effect.
Two weeks later I was sacked. A week after that I was working for more money in better conditions and at a job I enjoyed. Telling that banker that was I fcuck working for fcuk all did me a favour.
But yes they can expect you to work a percentage of your normal working week extra as unpaid overtime.
The usual answer to that is fcuk off you daft tw@. Then you start looking for another job because your card has been well and truely marked.

Fcuk, it's a whole weird world out there. My employer can't force me to work paid OT, never-mind unpaid!

I work what is classed as "all hours worked" However, I am expected to manage my own hours to average 37hr per week, I can take rest days to make up for times when I am required on duty, for operational reasons.

I allegedly wasn't sacked because I refused to work overtime for fcukall. It was because I was obstructive and uncooperative.
I think that meant that I had a life outside the company and they didn't like the idea that they were not the sole reason for my existance. That was at home. My family.

i have the same problem, it seems to becoming more normal that a company can put in to your contract 10% unpaid overtime if business require it.

that means if I'm supposed to finish at say 2 am on a late shift and the over night person calls in and says for what ever reason he cant make it then I'm expected to carry on for up to 4 hours with nothing to show for it a week.
Show me where the trench is at or can i make one!

For 'saleried' employees, this is normal practice providing it's in the terms & conditions of the individual's "contract of employment".

There is the expectation, that both employers & employees work out what is reasonable for both parties.

Hell, I’d hate to be in a job where your main focus is how much you’re getting paid and clock-watching, waiting for home time.

I would have thought in this economic climate people would be prepared to do a little extra to help the company.

I work unpaid overtime every day and rarely claim for weekends. I’m entitled to 5 weeks holiday each year..... this year I have taken 4 days, last year 1 day for hospital appointment. We have been short staffed in the Herpetarium for the last 2 ½ years but even before that I’d try not to take holidays. Been in the job 16 years and I worked out that in that time I have racked up 50+ weeks of holidays that I have not taken and not been paid for, so in effect I've worked 1 year for free

Broke my collar bone but still carried on with my work (with some extra help).
I do earn a good wage but work for me is more about job satisfaction, I enjoy what I do and that is worth more than moaning about a few extra £’s for any overtime or not taking hoildays

Yeah, you'll get rewarded in heaven. Companies, whichever and whatever they are operate to make profit, not to benefit workers, so, if they make that profit through your working then they should pay for hours worked, some fat CEO with a whopping bank balance is laughing at you on a daily basis working for nothing to keep his family comfortable, it wouldn't be me. There are no fat cats here, (virtually) everyone from the Director down does more than they are paid to do. I did get a very good pay rise last year (& backpay) when my job description was reviewed..... as I say money is not everything in a place like this.

Reward in Heaven? .... knowing that I personally have helped save over 12,000 lives is reward enough without having to leave my mortal coil.

Yes, I know I should take holidays, but unless I’m overseas I’d rather be at work caring for my animals.

British workers have better conditions and quality of life than at any time in history yet they are often amongst the laziest workforces in the world.
If I won the pools I’d still want to do the same sort of work.... but maybe in a better climate.

As brummie pointed out, my member was sacked for "refusing to adhere to a reasonable management request"

Just come back from the hearing, I dont expect the chap to get his job back as the manager hearing the case commented that he expected staff to be flexible and work whatevery hours it took to get the job done.

Our argument was that the week before the waggon they were using broke down and that the smaller waggon they used meant more trips back and forth thus overtime that they refused to pay, therefore breaching his contract as it stated overtime will be paid after 39 hours.

I feel an ET1 coming on (Employment tribunal)

I know of a few companies like that, and to be honest they are a pleasure to negotiate with as they do generally care about the workforce.

Not this lot i'm dealing with a the moment, summed it all up when I drove in the carpark and it was a sea of BMW's (all the real workers own old micra's parked on the road!)

I wonder when bankers like that will come to realise that appart from the person who gets the contracts/sells the product the most important people working for the company are the ones who actually make the product and every body else is there solely to make it easy for them to do thier jobs.To ensure that all the parts/tools are available as needed and there is a complete package with no delays available for the sales person to sell.
When the shineyarse brigade realise this the company is a pleasure to work for and usualy succesfull as every one is prepared to go the extra mile because they know thier efforts are appreciated its when these efforts are expected as a right and taken for granted that fcuk off are usually the first words to cross your mind.

OK I,ll put my soapbox away now
