That's a very loose interpretation. Their actual use isn't illegal.

With regards to the actual question. They minimise coking, (or whatever the proper term is), and damage to the turbine bearings and such from that.

Spot on Matt - what I should have said is that it's illegal to leave a vehicle unattended on the public highway with the engine running

Ya can just see mine by the ign switch, if your a gadget man go for it, their a usefull as the inclinometer, look good but not essencial, you know when the angle's too steep cos your arse slids off the seat and unless your in the habit of caneing the buggery out of the engine and comeing to an abrupt stop and switching the engine off the timers not really needed,

if your turbo changes colour and you can see it glowing red after driving then you need a turbo timer...

if it doesn't then you don't
