  • Effective action to reduce petrol prices...........

I got sent this by email, seems a good idea and worth a try....

    "
hey everyone ... this is a really constructive and effective way to make the multinationals stand up and pay attention - read on....

Petrol prices are once again on the rise... Looks like we're going to hit close to 89p a litre in some places by the summer. Want petrol prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRERANGE

Action: It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)

The funny thing about petrol and diesel is that it only seems to be the UK that has high and always rising prices.

If the government lowered the tax on fuel to about 70% (!) what would that make the price of a litre? I was lead to believe that it was OUR government that was the reason the cost was so high, started by the conservatives in the 80's and labour continued the policy.

Hiking the price of fuel has bugger all to do with helping the environment, it's just extra revenue. That's it, rant over!

It`s exactly the same with the duty payable on using veggie oil. It has been proved time and time again that using VO reduces co2 emissions and reduces harmful effects to the environment by a terrific amount. This govt has conceded to reduce the duty payable by 20p per litre, it now stands at 27.5p compared to 47.5p for ULSD. The governments message about wanting to reduce the greenhouse effect is a load of bo***cks. If they were really serious about it, there would be no duty payable at all, as in the rest of europe. I would by no means describe myself as an anarchist but i really think it`s about time that we in this country stood up for ourselves and stopped letting successive governments treat us like idiots. We may not like some of the drastic action that the French and other countries sometimes take but let`s face it - IT DOES USUALLY GET RESULTS! BRING ON THE REVOLUTION!!

mark i tend to agree its the TAX not the petrol companies so hitting the garage wont hurt as much as bringing the country to a standstill. The french seem to get the job done.

everyone seems to miss one vital point when it comes to fuel duty... and that is; if they where to reduce it where will the government find an alternative to the fuel duty cash-cow?

Unfortunately its the multinationals that seem to own the power with the DTI and goverment. Money talks and its the coffers that go into the politicians pots that seem to do the most.

                          Fuel Price Reduction?

At the risk of being the harbinger of common sense in this discussion....
I am an employee of one of the two majors mentioned, and three years ago was employed by the other. Various takeovers dictated that I was 'TUPEd' from one to the other. (Those of you that have been through TUPE will understand its limitations as a regulation!)
I have no intent of joining the argument concerning how much, or not, the majors affect the price of fuel at the pumps. What I can say is the two companies DO NOT have any business connections, if fact, they do their business in very different ways. What I will say regarding the concept of boycotting the two companies mentioned, or the other 'big boys' for that matter such as Conoco/Phillips, Shell or Texaco/Chevron, is that the most important fact is that they 'own and operate' all the UK refineries that the fuel comes from. So all that fuel you buy from the independants such as ASDA/TESCO/Morrisons etc. all comes from the same refineries so will therefore have no effect on the majors.
It's a nice thought, but I suggest that lobbying the government/your MP is likely to be more effective that boycotting one or other of the major oil companies.
As an aside, I am now running the G2 on Global Diesel from TESCO, (5% veggy). The most disappointing thing I have found out regarding this is that the UK producers cannot get into this market, it is being imported from the continent!
