    They reduce NOX emmisions by re-introducing exhaust gasses back into the engine to be re-burnt.
    NOX emmisions are not tested for (yet) in the UK, but by disconnecting them less smoke (usually) is produced and a bit more throttle response (marginally) can be gained.
    I disconnected mine when my truck was a 2.4, and completely deleted it on the V-8.
