I know they say diesel is preferable to petrol for overland trips due to the better availability of diesel... but I’ve not had any problems finding petrol in North or West Africa.

It can be worrying to see how they have petrol for sale beside the road stored in open toped bottles/jugs/ buckets etc. and how people have lit cigarettes in their mouths as they pour it into your tank.

There have been several cases that I know of in Nigeria and Cameroun where petrol tankers have crashed or people have smashed into fuel pipes and all the locals rush out with buckets, pans and bottles to collect the petrol... then someone turns up on a motorbike or smoking a cigarette and the whole lot goes up, burning countless people alive... anything up to a 100 dead.

Here is an example that happened last week in an area I know well : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7587501.stm
