Hi I am new on this forum and lookingto buy a Surf. I am looking for a 3rd gen as new as my budget will afford and as high spec SSRG or X as possible. Is there any decent specialist dealers in the country? or would it be better to have opne imported. Thanks

Personally, if I'd got pots of cash I'd get one imported by one of the specialists in this sort of thing.
Failing that I'd scour the Jap import dealers to see what was available.
Being a cheap skate (in the blood I'm afraid - half Scottish, half Yorkshire) I'd hunt far and wide and find one at a dealers that hadn't got a clue what they'd got and were letting it go for a song!

Might be helpful if you shared what your budget is, etc, to give folks an idea of what you've got to play with...

Decent dealers: Possibly but you will be paying way over the odds for one.

Import one: Unless you fly out to Japan to inspect it first you will be buying it 'blind'. Then there is all the hassle and added cost of importing it and having it VOSA registered for use in the UK.

3rd gens often crop up in the 'For Sale' section on here, keep your eyes open. You could do a lot worse than buy Kevin Turners truck, I've seen it and it's in great condition. He has looked after it very well.

Thanks for all the replys. My current budget is fairly flexible depending on what is available. One of my main reasons for wanting a surf is that our pair of dogs are not doing my 07 Mondeo estate anygood. So that will be going. I would like the highest range model possible, I think that is the SSRG. However I will consider anything that is in good order and tidy. How many miles are the 3.0 TD good for before needing anything major?

Depends what you mean by 'major'. If you mean things like a new engine, then a well serviced one should do 200k miles +.

Mine's done 120k miles and is 15 years old, and has seen a medium level of abuse and the most major things its needed have been a new rad and a rear wheel bearing, but it does get regular servicing.

Last as long as u keep them good. think mine has about 150k on it, still goes strong. Mind u am off down south today so truth will tell but neither my 2.4 or this one has ever let me down.

Only thing I can think of offhand, apart from regular services, is the timing belt at 100,000 kms (or 90,000 if you don't want to take a chance)!

That's practically just broken in. (Is that miles or kilometres)? I'll be hitting the 200K km's mark around 3K from now.

That'll ony be miles from when the speedo conversion was done though. That will be somewhat misleading, no?
