i wanted it to look factory fitted and i thought this system was perfect and as i was going for a platform van rack to bolt ontop of it, this system wouldve allowed me to go as big as i wanted unlike what the average surfer fits ontop of their roof.
also im not quite sure what or whom you were refering to when you said i should've said a polite cheers mate?? if you mean to Kerrsurf then you got the wrong end of the stick. i wasnt being rude to him. i was only joking with him. i thought the "lol" at the end made that clear?
i was gutted but also laughing my head off when he came up with that suggestion. i had spent hours searching and ages writing up my orignal post in the thought that i was going to be helping other fellow surfers out no end with this system as all the searches i did on the forum came up with a lot of people scratching their heads and being told they had to drop liner etc, drill and bolt some car rails to it.
dont forget that not everyone on this forum is mechanically minded or able to carry out such works. for me its a case of time and space which is why id rather spend the money.
like i said, i thought i was helping others by posting this....wasnt expecting to get slayed down and told that this had all been talked about before and trsut me it hasnt! i couldnt find one post where someone had suggested instead of droping the roof liner down, to use a rivetnut gun. thats a peice of pi$$ and that is what i would now recomend people instead of this. but for me thats still irrelevent becasue i wanted to go bigger.

but as Paul1655 has quite rightly pointed out that in the fitting instructions it says that its not to be used with sunroofs! so obviously i cant use this and i failed to spot this flaw.
however its still good for those who dont have sunroofs, or as Kerrsurf suggested just fix car rails with the same flare nut technique.

    oh well i tried.
    Jay.
Fair enough point taken, my polite comment was at the "but that will look shit" comment

was waiting for your reply. show off! lol

i got an email from a US site that ship to the UK.

comes in at £213 to your door. apart from the fitting kit which for some stupid reason they dont have on their website?? but you can get the fitting kit on ebay of all places for about £40 delivered. (?)

so thats about £250 and will take about 20 mins to fit and will allow you to have many different rack systems that usually arent available for the surf............for anyone who cares.......or is not able to carry custom work out themselves due to time, know how, tools or space like me.

oh that comment. it wasnt meant to be taken as harshly as it may have sounded. was hoping that people were starting to get a feel for my tone/humour. plus i didnt actually think he was being totally serious. i know BDT loves things new and shiny, so natually assumed he wouldnt have used that which was probably why i was a bit blunt.
i didnt take offence to his "phuq you" comment.....i just assumed he was acting the same as me.
sorry if you felt differently BDT. ?
i love you really. especially your shiny pipes.

Thats because you can't bolt anything substantial like a full roof cage/rack to the roof of a Surf any way else!
          Why you no rissen???
Copydex or Blue-tack just wouldn't be strong enough. And as for a 'factory fit look', how are you going to achieve that if no Surf or 4Runner left the factory with full length racks on them?
It seems to me like you need a Mercedes Sprinter, not a 4x4.

p.s. Have a look on Barryboys.co.uk for some money saving, fabrication techniques.

            Yeah, like wot he said.

A factory fit appearance is going to require holes drilled in the roof

Aye mate! same as that, the times i've "gone into detail" replying only to hear f##kall after, not even a cheers mate, kiss my arse or owt,

theres no easy way to fit a sturdy rack (especially for off road) without actually bolting it THROUGH the roof, pop rivited channel will not be strong enough and i would'nt trust rivnuts, ya need a decent backplate on each fitting,

I would have thought that the system Bundubasher and myself have on (roof rails gripping the tops of the door openings and free float rails at the back with a bit of ply covering them) are pretty strong. Bundu has had roof tents, fuel cans and (perish the thought) spares up there and been on roads around Africa.

Only weaknessess I would see are a) if you were reversing through heavy overhead foliage you could cacth the free floated back and lift it (but there are ways around this of making the back a bit more 'attached' and b) it looks a bit crap to say the least.
                          Works though

It would seem strong enough. It's must be one of the few parts of the vehicle which BB never managed to destroy and had to replace.

If I remember correctly, there were a few full length roof racks that came across from Japan. These mounted like the Thule roof bars on the front and rear doors, had resting feet at the back and then bolted onto the rear wiper mechanisum (somehow). It's been a good few years since I last saw any mention of anything like this, so I resurve the right to be talking complete twaddle.

I think you're right, I seem to remember something along thosae lines and was planningto look into attaching the back of mine the the rear wiper mech.
Either that or sticking a couple of dirty great aerial mag mounts on the back on bolting into them
