  • Help, what should I do?

Ok it is time to ask for the wisdom of the forum members...

My Surf (3:0 V6 Petrol) has been idling a little rough first thing in the morning for a while now, so yesterday it went into the garage for a diagnostic test. Timing and fuelling were perfect so they tested the coolant and it showed that there was a small amount of combustion gases in the coolant

They put in some K-seal, ran the engine, re-did the test and it is fine now.

I only had the head gaskets replaced 13,000 miles ago (Feb 2007) and discussing the situation with the garage owner it was agreed not to spend money striping off the heads to check the gaskets. He did say the vehicle was in fantastic condition for its age.

The MOT is up in late October so do I?

    1. Put the Surf on E-Bay
    2. Ask if anyone here wants it (cheap) for parts or V8 conversion
    3. Wait and put it through another MOT
    4. Wait till near the MOT and take off the good bits
    5. The garage suggested PX it somewhere (I could not offload it knowing it might be faulty)

    The good bits:
    1. It has a set of general grabber AT2 that have only done 10,000 miles
    2. I put a brand new general grabber AT2 on the rear mounted spare only 2 weeks ago
    3. It has the desirable rear roof spoiler & brake light
    4. Rear mounted wheel carrier
    5. Rear luggage cover
    6. Full Recaro seats/ door panels
    7. Original Bull Bar
    8. Original tow bar

    9. It has not been trashed on pay & play sites
    10. Everything works fine, windows, electrics ect.

Being the PETROL version it might be useful for someone wanting to do a Lexus V8 conversion, less trouble than converting a diesel Surf.

I’m not actually that upset about the result of the diagnostic test as I have had 3 years of good low cost motoring from this Surf and I want to move up to a Land Cruiser anyway.

So what do you guys think?

I would be happy with either, but having studied the specs for some time it looks as though the only way I can get the Auto, Leather and Cruise Control combination that I want is if I go for a UK built Petrol version..... and the petrol version does not suffer from the BEB problem.

I am used to the consumption of the V6 petrol Surf so I’d be happy with a petrol LC80... plus I have never owned a diesel before, so they are all a bit alien to me. Oh and The Lovely Boyo seems very happy with his petrol LC80.

Go for it mate, they are a mighty machine.... I am loving mine....

BEB's are only a problem on the 12v diesel and are not expensive to get done..
less then £200 to play it safe...

I suppose if u don't go off-roading to much the petrol will be fine for u..
There are a few nice petrols on ebay at the moment for not a lot...
          what is your budget?

I love the diesel and I prefer them, but I have drove a petrol the other day and it's also a mighty truck..... lovely to drive....u just have to love the LC's......
One day at the time I guess..
