the button on the side is just an electrical switch to select 4/2wd so order one from toyota, selector know just 1 screw and it lifts off the shaft.
the lever should pull backwards anyway so select between high and low range...
there are loads of surs about so unless it's a real good price, look for another

the lever is all the way back in high (does this mean its in 2wd?) and it wont budge ! i thought the button had to be pressed for the lever to move.

nah, backward should be in 4wd low and forward will be in high, selectable between 2 and 4wd
if you do a search there's a diagram of it knocking about somewhere!

The lever when in the rear position is in H ratio. The button puts it in 4wd while in High ratio. The lever should move whether the button is in or not. If you select low ratio (fully forward) it will select 4wd like it or not.

The lever should have 3 positions, High (rear), Neutral (middle), Low 4WD (forward).

If the lever is jammed then you either have a transfer box problem or a gear shaft problem. The lever can only be moved when in Neutral or Park on the transmission lever for an auto and in neutral on a manual.

The button can be pressed in to select 4WD high when moving at up to 60KMH.

          Cheers

            4wd

thanx that explains how it all works a bit better. so with there being no button on i wont be able to tell if its in 2 or 4wd ???? and also the lever did seem as though it was stuck all the way back !

should i let this put me off buying the thing or can it be sorted ??

If it's a really good price then I'd still consider it - unless the transfer lever really is jammed as that could be expensive. If it's just the button then it should be fixable real easy - if you can't get a button you could extend the cabling and put a push button switch on the dash - it's only a standard on off push switch just with a fancy faceplate on it.

If it's a top end price for a 2.4 then I'd pass it up, there are plenty available.

                Cheers

                  3300

its been imported a month looks really tidy very clean underneath and under the bonnet bit used inside, got 97000 kms on it but lookin at the inside it seems more used than that but who knows !

slight damage to the trim around the rear wheel arch some trim missing but doesnt stand out that much.

its a guy off the same street as me and he wants 4k in the auto trader but he wud let me have it for 3300 ! does this price sound realistic ? its a j 1992 !!!???

£3300 is a fairly good price for a 2.4 1992. But you'll need to spend a little to get the 4WD fixed. Up to you... but there are a lot around now. Have a look on the Surfs for sale section - you can pick up some nice ones for £4k with no work to do....

Just been reading this thread and thought i should really check my 4wd works before sunday, i can change between H and L but the lever is quite stiff, is this normal on a 2.4 2nd gen. And whats the procedure for changing between high and low should the vehicle be stationary in gear, neautral or parking?

It's all on the forum in FAQ.

Yep it's normally quite stiff. It certainly isn't like a normal gear lever.

You can put it into 4wd with the button while moving up to 60kmh however you must be stationary and in park or neutral to change between high and low ratio.

                            Cheers

                              surfer soon

just been with the guy whos sellin the surf to the toyota main dealer and hes ordered the button for the 4wd and a couple of bits of trim !!

so ive said if he gets the 4wd up and running (im hoping the lever just needs a heavy hand to get it shifted to and from L & H) and its workin ok i'l buy it ! so folks i hope to be an up and running surfer by the end of the month !!
