  • Jump starting

A friend just bought a 2006 Jaguar S type diesel...

Anyhow skimming through the cars manual, it states..

"If jump starting from another vehicle, ensure other vehicles engine is not running, if its running when you attempt to start, damage to the vehicle (jags) electrics will occur" not may occur but will occur

I just wonder how many other modern vehicles are sensitive to a hot jump start...

yes that was the other interesting point, according to the same manual the -ive of the jump lead should not be connected to the battery -ive, but to a point on the chassis at least 30 cm away...

what gets me..if the power derived from a normal start is taken from the battery via its terminals why move the -ive for a jump start

yep its quite normal on modern cars, yes to protect ecu, other thing they dont say, which everyone in recovery knows is once jump started leave connected for atleast 5 mins, for voltage to stabilse, due to modern cars and the lovely smart charge alternator,if u take lead off straight after, alternator goes nuts and spikes ecu etc as it suddenly realises a flat battery

Basically boils down to poor design. It's not hard to protect electronics from transients etc, but it does cost more.

That extra 5p must have been a killer on their profits.

If thats jaguars attitude to build quality, it does not bode well for the rest of the car, just been on honest johns website.... lots of faults on the jag

                        Or Surf/landcruiser

But what I'm getting at is the Jag will suffer the same fauts as the Mondeo, since they use same components (engines/ecu/can-bus networking etc)

As well as its own ..."rubber boot seal has a habit of coming off.. needs to be glued down to prevent water ingress...destroying electrics as battery in the boot"... ah BL/rover group build quality is alive and well..
