  • Hello, first time poster

Hi people, I've just joined the forum and hope to be able to contribute one way or another!
I have owned my 1996 series 3 Silver SSRG 3.0td for about 3 months and made the purchase largely based on the comments on this web site (as a non member).
So far its not been a purchase I've regretted.

I have a question about my vehicle which I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I'm planning on towing a caravan to the south of Spain and I'm trying to work out what my likely fuel consumption is going to be - with or without a caravan in tow. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Thanks for that Diezel. I've done a rough calculation and I have to say, if this is right I'm pretty impressed; 65 Litre tank, 525km from full tank, multiplied by 4.54 (litres to the gallon) and I get 36.67!!!!!!! All I've done since I bought the Surf was to do an oil change (used Magnatec) & filter, plus replace the standard paper air filter with a K&N. That seems to be a rather tasty improvment from my previous motor - Volvo V70 T5 SE (22mpg).
Anyone got any thoughts on this mpg return I'm getting? Got a few gadgets on their way to try and get even more out of the tank.

          Hi and welcome.
The other hairdressers will be along soon to say hi aswell

i might be wrong but i worked it out at just under 23mpg
the way i did it was
          multiply 0.6214m's by 525km's = 326.235 miles.
divide 326.235m by 14.39 gal (full tank)
this will give you just under 23mpg

I have a thought, several in fact. Dont believe it is my first one. I can get 31/32 maybe on a motorway drive provided I keep to the speed limits and drive fairly gently. Average mpg in day to day use is more like 25/27 and again thats with a fairly easy style of driving. I think maybe youre counting mechanism is flawed. I also thought that the 3rd gen had a 70L tank. I take it youre not using the fuel gauge as an indication of how much fuel you have used ? Only way to do this is to fill up till the gun stops. set the odo to zero and after a bunch of driving fill up again till the gun trips. Maybe do it a couple of times for better accuracy.
Then come back and tell us you are getting 37mpg.
Im also going to assume that you are not confusing km with miles on your odo.

Oh, and WELCOME to the forum.

Ok, definately not confusing Miles and Km's, the spedo was changed to mph but the odo is still in km's. I've also done the full to the brim and run it till almost empty experiment.
There can't be too many ways of working this out. 65l tank = 525km's = 8.07 km's per litre. Multiply 8.07 by 4.54 (litres to uk gallon ratio) and presto, 36.67.
Even taking it on a 70l tank (not sure how big out tanks are) it works out to 34mpg.

Oh yeah forgot to mention another mod I did, doh. I installed one of those cyclone things into the air inlet pipe, at the manifold end. There were claims of silly mpg increases with it of "up to" 30%, maybe it's working to some degree.

Ok, heres one of the right ways

525km= 328 miles ( can we agree on this ?)
65 litres= 14.3 gallons ( can we agree on this?)

                  328 divided by 14.3 = 22.937

Stormy was correct 23 mpg is the answer and realistically is the answer Id expect. Sorry to burst your " happy" bubble, but the Surf is still a great vehicle and youve got a 3rd gen which are simply the best, and certainly better than your Volvo.

PS the coversion factor for km/l to mpg is x 2.825, not x 4.54 as you have used. That is the conversion for gallons to litres

I do hear what you're saying but I can't quite get my head out of the space it's in right now. If I get 525kms from my 65L that works out to be 8.07 km's per litre. There are 4.54 litres per gallon (multiply 8.07 by 4.54) making the total 36.6. I do agree though that if you convert each stat as you go along you do end up with your total. What am I / is going wrong there?

                      Your getting 36.6kmspg!

As your doing all your sums using KMS the end result is still in KMS. convert 36.6 KMS into miles an you'll have your answer!

You haven't converted the Km to miles .......

If I drive like a saint I get 30mpg normally between 25-27 unless there's a lot of short trips/town driving.

I've never bothered working out the mpg when I'm towing the van - I don't want to know and I certainly don't want the boss reducing our caravaning just because of the fuel costs !

                        Damn - second again !

The answer is 22.74mpg which is less than optimum - when was it last serviced ???

Life is too important to take seriously !

nothing like introducing yourself to a new forum when your head's full of cotton wool ! Thanks guys. I am going to be trying some gadgets soon inc, mass air meter surgical cleansing, possibly a magnet and a funky electrical device that reduces the amount of fuel injected. I shall post my findings once fully tested.
