Mne used to get so hot that a bottle of pop left laying against the tunnel would be undrinkably hot within an hours drive.

Fitting the Milner 1.5'' body lift made a huge difference - air can flow past the tranny and help dump heat that would otherwise radiate into the car via the tunnel.

Also, have a think about fitting a tranny cooler - very easy job and they only cost about £20 or so.

just some thinking on why the trans tunnel feels hot, yes mine does too, as the body of the car is completely separate to the chassis and therefore not structural as a normal monocoque car chassis/body, the metal used in construction may well be thinner and would therefore transmit heat through to the interior easier.
I may well be wrong but it's a thought

Yes, I will be fitting a body lift - but only an inch - it doesn't cause any linkage problems. I've heard that an inch can make all the difference

I have a welding set in the garage that I am going to use to fab up a tube bumper for the front and rear - but I want to do the lift first so there won't be any gaps.

Milners do an 1.5 inch lift kit for the cruisers - I'm going to get that and have the pucks turned thinner.

well iv got a 2" lift on mine mate and im in the process of driving around europe,and after 20min you can fry a egg on gear shroud, it is not right,something has to give,can somone explaine why some surfs do it and some dont, mine never use to ?????????????????????????????? ???????,im on your side it is very worring, iv just changed gear box oil and coolants,uj has a bit of play but very very small.
mine sometimes gets hot on motorways then cold for 20mins then hot again,it seems to be doing it more and more and staying hotter for longer,but its running sweet????

You notice it more now cos you're worried, thats all.

Honestly, mine used to get so hot that it was uncomfortable to touch, and it heated the interior up. Noticed it more in the summer cos ambient is higher.

it *is* definitely better now I have a tranny cooler.

I know on motorway runs in my V6 petrol I have to be careful not to forget about my Cadbury Twirl... If I leave it in the centre console, it can start to melt slightly after 30 mins and doesn’t taste as good.

Otherwise no problems at all with heat build-up.

I have a hot trans tunnel, not worried though 2nd gen 3.0 sitting on 245/75r16 tyres

Mine was hot on standard tyres, on muds, on 33" ATs. Now its warm with ATF cooler.

Didn't say boiling, though the ATF runs hotter than the engine coolant - hence the overheating of coolant by the ATF we hear about.

ok, based on peoples experiences here I just phoned an auto transmission specialist who says on average the auto trans fluid normally operates at around 100-120 degrees C, so thats a fair bit hotter than the engine operates at, his advice for anyone concerned is to buy a cheap temperature sticker and put it on the oil pan to get an idea of how hot it is getting, if it's too hot then his advise, as has already been mentioned, is to fit an aftermarket trans cooler.

What type of tranny cooler would you advise (this mod has been on my list for 6 years now, but this year I'm going to do it) the smallest one I can find is in the states and is rated for 5 tonnes (a bit heavier than my truck fully loaded). Would this be overkill?

On the subject matter of the tunnels heat, mine has always got hot, but not excessivley, and that includes towing up Scottish hills (us English would call them mountains).

I have a 2nd hand mocal oil cooler off ebay. The matrix is around 250mm x 150mm x 40mm thick. Seems adequate. I wouldn't get too anal about the size of it because whatever you fit, you'll be taking some heat out before it gets to the rad.

Thanks for that. That's rougthly the same size as what I'm looking at.
