It's Sunday, fathers day, my crystal ball has a crack in it, I've lost my tarrot cards and Mystic Meg's phone is engaged.
Can we have a few more clues please?
    Year.
    Engine size.
    Diesel or petrol.
    Auto or manual.
    Colour......(OK, forget the colour)
Where the steam is coming from.
    Any dash lights on.
    One or two batteries.

If steam was coming out ,did you look as to where it was coming from?
Why would you try start it with this problem?
Sounds like you have a leak somewhere,or worse.

im guessing by "wouldnt start" you mean that it just turned over and over? did it sound like it was trying to fire or did it sound like it was a really cold morning and there was no hope?

also, how did it sound when it was turning over? did it sound like it was going faster than normal, or did it sound like it usually does when it tries to start?

I had this problem with the batteries on my surf when I picked it up but the bloke told me that I'd probably need a new one.
Both batteries were originals (92 K reg) so I thought that it could be one of 2 things:

              1. They were deeply discharged and needed a long recharge.
              2. They were at the end of their life and knackered.

checked out how much batteries were and thought I'd get myself a charger first.

£40 and 3 days later I had 2 fully charged batteries that were holding a charge.

The bloke you got it off had bumped the surf to start it and probably did not have the stereo or anything else on to drain the power. Mine would hold a charge for a day so long as I didn't have the radio or lights on for a long time.

The charger I got was a RING Smart Battery Charger £40 from Halfords and can revive deeply discharged batteries but also tells you if the battery is knackered. In my eyes worth every penny.

As for the steam I hope it's not a cracked head, if it's an LN130 2.4TD it could well be cause mine has just been fixed.

                    Lets guess then.........

From my minute experience with Surfs it'll probably involve a split radiator somewhere.
                    Leading to maybe shorted battery?

hi,sorry for not giving you a bit more info earlier but i was abit panicked.
the surf is a 95 kzn 130 3.0td with 135000 km,s on the clock,it had the head done last summer and has been on a sorn since november.
as i said earlier i picked it up on friday afternoon and drove about 10 or 15 miles with no problems, saturday i drove for about 80 mile again no problem a delight,i drove it for 5 miles into town this morning and when i parked up i saw some steam coming from under the bonnet i had to go away for an hour so when i came back i wanted to see would it start, she just turned over and on the second attempt the twin battery,s seemed to drain so i decided to leave it alone until i could get a mechanic which will be monday,
i hope some off you guys can shed some light on the situation for me,thanks.
by hte way my mate reckons it might be something to do with the thermostate.

well the first thing i would do is make sure there is water in the rad for a start,if its low top it up.could be something as simple as a knackered rad cap or something as bad as a cracked head.
