I always thought the spring determined the load capacity, and the shock determines the compression / rebound 'speed' or its opposition to movement. Get any shock at all and you'll be able to compress / extend it by hand albeit slowly. Same cant be said for springs!

Correct. Thats why they're called dampers.
Technically, the springs are the shock absorbers.
Best suspension invention was the coil-over.
